we are at the vallejo police department. at the front of the door you can see the memorial that continues to grow. in the last hour we have seen one man that came here to pay his respects and take a moment. by the time he left he was clearly overwhelmed. the officer of jim capoot still has this community reeling. it all happened yesterday afternoon when the 19-year-old veteran responded to a bank robbery call. police say he was alone when hi caught the suspects car. he gave chase and found fatally shot in the backyard of a home. the neighborhood on the north side of vallejo was shut down overnight. she was not home at the time as her mother prepares to head back into the home she has lived in for 60 years, she is still struggling with what happened. >> not just an officer got killed, an officer got killed in front of her home. >> reporter: and an officer she knew. >> and an officer she knew. >> reporter: as the morning continues so does the investigation. one suspect is in custody. police are still looking for other possible

tragedy vallejo after a member of the police force was shot and killed today. james capoot had been fighting crime for nearly 20 years when his life and career came to an untimely end today. >> reporter: pam , right now, one suspect is behind bars. we don't know much about who that suspect is. i can tell you that in the last five-minute, police have cleared this area directly behind me, taken down the yellow tape, and area where this officer was killed. >> reporter: s.w.a.t. team members with guns drawn as they searched this vallejo neighborhood for the second suspect in the shooting of an officer who was gunned down chasing a man. in route, officers spotted the suspect's suv that you see here. after a 3 to 4-mile high speed chase, the suv was bumped by police, spun out, and there was a foot chase with the suspect, shots were fired, and an officer went down, eventually dying from his wounds. police said the officer did not fire any shots and was wearing body armor. officers arrested a suspect shortly thereafter and closed off roads in the area and went door to

he is also coach at the vallejo high school girls basketball team. a lot of people came by the lobby of the police department to drop off flowers, cards, and their prayers. now, his accused killer henry smith from fairfield. smith, who is 37 years old pleaded not guilty to a slew of charges, five charges against him total. among them, murder against a peace officer and capital murder. if he is found guilty of these charges, he could get the death penalty. now, his next court appearance is tomorrow when a judge will make -- will rule on a gag order filed by the prosecutors. the shooting happened on the afternoon of november 17 on janice street. capoot has been chasing smith by car and then when smith got out of his car, capoot ran after him into the nearby neighborhood backyards and that's when smith allegedly shot him. police say smith had robbed a bank of america branch on smith road. if you are attending this morning's service, police department says to carpool and park at the solano county fairgrounds within shuttle bus will be provided. back to y
