what has happened is because van ness has gotten sleepy, and when something happens, it is a big deal. we are talking about a major thoroughfare in a major city, which is pretty dead. i am remembering in my mind. when i opened up my club in 1997, the street was utterly dead. it was a significant thoroughfare, but it was totally dead. when i tried to open my business, the police objected, and i had to go to the board of permit appeals for a year and a half in order to beat them. five or six years later, what triggered and drove me to help create the small business assistance center is i had gotten so delayed by the sunni in a business that actually helped greatly turn the street around. so what i try to express to people is that if you want to help revitalize an area in this day and age, you're going to have to include liquor licenses. and with liquor licenses come challenges and an occasional problem. but that is part of the give and take of getting an area revitalized. i'm just putting it out there, that this seems like reaction area legislation on behalf of the supervisor, which i c

it's basically between potrero avenue and south van ness. very mixed neighborhood.the base of potrero hills where the design related businesses are. it's the 3 clusters we look at. the fourth one is bay view's hunter's point. we have recommended to transition about half of the industrial land in those 4 neighborhoods out of industrial and into neighborhoods. it's a finely wrought compromise for the city's need for housing and the imperative to keep some of these larger rougher businesses able to survive in the city. from catering kitchens to auto repair. furniture wholesaling, a lot of things that need larger, cheaper spaces to occur. those businesses they provide support for the the city's front office economy. the downtown offices, tourist industry. all of those businesses need support for linen washing, printing and what have you. so the idea is to support the economy and secondly the jobs provided are very good stable jobs. some activities that used to be clearly unindustrial active, because of technology changes take place in a base that looks like an office. p

very good news, almost done with my report, very good news on the van ness ave transportation project. we received notice from the state historic preservation officer. i agree with the assessment of the classification of the old light poles. the office essentially agrees that because of lack of integrity to convey significance, the polls, although historically significant, are not an item that will be listed. so, that has removed a potentially interesting obstacle to moving the project forward in an expedited manner. we are now at the point where we have read designated the project managers and engineers to staff the engineering effort. so, we are boys to have capital programs and construction division initiate 30% engineering on the project. we are moving this forward and i am delighted that we have achieved that major milestone. my last item is simply to welcome major markets, our new senior transportation planner. richard has a bachelor's degree in sociology and urban planning, 12 years of transportation planning experience, has worked for metro north in new york city, for the oran

there is another thing to consider when you are buying and building to the east of the van ness ave. a third map. this map depicts the area of the fire that followed the 1906 earthquake. the blue is where all the buildings were destroyed or badly damaged by the fire. as a result, the ashes from those fires remained on site. in those days, lead paint was used to paint the sides of buildings. it is a known carcinogen. it is a hazardous material. what they did was after the earthquake, they took these mounds of sand, the valencia st. hill, if you go up market street, you know how it starts to climb? imagine that was a much larger hill. they mined 26 million cubic yards of sand out of theire, and they mixed it with the debris from the fire and they used it to fill basements. so you have sand, ash, pieces of wood, brick. well, the ash is a hazardous material. you come along and used to buy a site at sixth and mission, with the understanding you will demolish the building and build a 50 story building. and you thought you were just going to dig out the sand, the film, and haul it to anothe
