vaughn, what do we know at this hour about the former president's travel plans? reporter: we were told that just any minute now, that donald trump is set to leave his bedminster club here in new jersey. it's going to be about a 40 minute motorcade ride to newark international airport. he will then fly to miami. at that point he will head to doral, which is the resort that he owns down there. for donald trump, i think it's important to note he comes up here in new jersey for the summertime to get away from the humidity of florida, and not to be too cheeky here, but he finds himself in a sticky situation forcing him to go back down there. he has blasted off multiple social media posts over the last three days suggesting this is part of that prosecutorial misconduct, the deep state witch hunt to undermine him. it is us versus them, and for donald trump, this is just an extension at it at a time in which even his own republican rivals are questioning how to move forward and use the evidence brought against him by the department of justice. the prosecutors are looking

vaughn, you were in new hampshire with the former president. he looked very subdued in that brief clip we saw. he keeps coming up with these different explanations for the bedminster audio, which is potentially very damaging. >> look, we started last august with his assertion that perhaps the fbi planted documents. over the course of the last ten months, it has been hard for me to keep track of his explanations and his own legal defenses. a week ago, compared to the day before, and then the two explanations yesterday, when he was asked about, quote, plans he referenced, he said he was referring to his golf course plans and his, quote, building plans. he is crossing so many pieces of yarn that it's creating a knot that prosecutors are going to have to get through. i'm struggling based off the number of defenses. i have no doubt that for the department of justice, it's tougher. >> if it's difficult for the department of justice, harry, it's so difficult for the defense. >> very. i think they just display the knot to the jury. it says two things.

joining me now is vaughn hillyard with former president trump in concord and charlie sykes and whileui. vaughn, donald trump is set to speak there shortly after desantis earlier was asked about the former president and the january 6 issue. how important is new hampshire for the two frontrunners? i think you have some sound of what he had to say, desantis. >> reporter: right. new hampshire is going to be important for anybody coming out of iowa, especially knowing that donald trump won easily eight years ago in the state. while ron desantis may not be in a position to win the state, to remain competitive to go to south carolina is key. the issue is, trump aides have told me over the last weeks that he is owning all of the oxygen in the republican room, around the indictments, around the investigations into him, while there's a great many folks around the country that don't think they are good for him, at the same time it's dominating the conversation within the republican primary. ron desantis tried to turn this on its head earlier down the road. take a listen. >> if this election is

and vaughn hillyard will join us in just a moment from the campaign trail with how things are going on the road as donald trump tries to block out ron desantis. what exactly are the two men saying or not saying about this new reporting? joining me now is nbc news justice and intelligence correspondent ken dilanian. so, ken, what do we know? >> a source directly familiar with the matter told us this tape was a meeting of a july 2021 at donald trump's residence there, talking in an autobiography of his former chief of staff, mark meadows, the subject of iran came up. he mentioned a document he acknowledged was secret, we are told, that discussed military options for striking iran, so this would be the first time we've heard of donald trump acknowledged possessing classified information, and it would be on tape, and something the prosecutors are interested in. we're told they played it in grand jury testimony, and obviously deeply significant because it under cuts trump's argument that he declassified all the material he took from the white house, but more important than that, it suggests

much more reflective of the rest of the republican field. >> if we can pull up the statements that vaughnng from, and one of desantis's, i'll paraphrase part of it, you know, college admissions should be based on merit, and applicants should not be judged on race and ethnicity. at face value, a lot of people would agree with that. there's nuance that's not in that statement. what nuance would you point people to? >> part of the nuance is exactly what ron desantis is doing but taking all of these -- by banning certain books, taking certain curriculum out of the classroom, by using local school board elections to sort of influence the outcomes and who sits and makes those decisions about curriculum on the local school boards. what he's doing is setting the stage to basically not have people of color see themselves in education. that impacts college, high school to college transition, college-to-career transition. my fear is that like minded governors across the country would use the supreme court decision as an opportunity to stamp out anything related to diversity, equity and inclusion in
