you can seat destruction of the roof at the ark plaza in venice. stacy was working at her insurance agency. >> we heard a slight rumble, then it felt like the tiles lifted and is we could hear the roof peeling back. i opened the door and saw the roof covering all the vehicles in the back. >> reporter: straight line winds caused this expensive damage to the roof of several -- extensive damage to the roof of several businesses. >> some people were streaming tornado. and we looked out the backdoor, and it was nothing but aluminum roofing everywhere. >> reporter: 20 dogs and six employees were inside the pet salon when the storm hit. owner bobby gable is praising the quick work of the firefighters. >> they ran in, they helped us leash the dogs and get them all to safety. and we were just blessed. also checked the building and surrounding areas. >> most of the roof came off of the building. part of the upper portion of the roof. and it landed on some vehicles that were parked in the back. and we wanted to make sure right away that there was no one trapp

workers are going to have to shut down the venice county library due to mold problems. josh thomas is live. >> reporter: starting february 1st you won't be able to walk inside this library anymore. because officials say that they don't want to expose others to this impending danger. >> reporter: the venice public library has been a popular gathering place in this community for 50 years. >> this was one of the great places in venice. >> reporter: but there's a looming danger inside. been detected and the problem keeps getting worse. this room is locked and we're not allowed inside because the mold problem is so bad in there and county officials are so concerned about mold spreading through the rest of the library that they're not taking any chances. today county commissioners decided to close the library on february 1st. >> it's really with an abundance of caution about the well being of our citizens. >> reporter: so far no one has experienced health problems because of the mold. it's too expensive to clean up so officials say closing the library was the best option. but

the heaviest has been down to venice. there is another line coming. that will produce good downpours and put water on the roads that could cause hydroplaning. watch the i-75 corridor south of sarasota. we are looking at the spin in the atmosphere. that's our threat for today. a waterspout or an isolated tornado. i don't see anything near us at this point. see this line coming through tallahassee? see all these corkscrew things here? that's showing early rotation in the thunderstorms. that's the main line that will come through around 9:00. that's the threat. i want to point this out. see how this is bowing out? when that happens you get winds coming out of the storm.

high winds ripped all this aluminum tin off the art plaza on tamiami trail in venice. they are cleaning up here but thankfully no one here was injured. an aluminum roof shredded, 11:00 this morning. remnants landed on employees' vehicles parked around back. yummy's donuts and barbecue was waiting on customers when it hit. >> straightline wind come through, lost our power and heard a big boom. looked out the back door and the roof was completely off the building. >> reporter: the strip mall also houses a dog grooming business and after the roof was blown off here, owners of about 20 dogs showed up in a panic to check their dogs and remove them. they did and that took a while during all the confusion. extensively. building, steve? >> reporter: well, according to county inspectors, other than the aluminum roof and cars that were damaged out back when the roof came off, the building is in pretty good shape. there's actually a gravel roof that was under that aluminum cap so exposure to the elements should be minimal. >> thank you. >>> also in venice today, this video from e

strong storms ripped the roof off of a strip mall in venice. you can see where the high winds peeled that metal roof right off. >> and we have team coverage of the storm damage for you tonight. steve andrews is live on the ground with an upclose look at all of the damage. >> we start with chief meteorologist steve. >> a strong line of thunderstorms coming off the gulf of mexico. particularly during an el nio phase, it's something we watch tornadoes to form very fast. frenchy's and clearwater beach there, temperatures are not gonna cool down. the thunderstorms continue well to the east of us. and today we saw the movement of these showers. that line early this morning, 9:00, 10:00, passed across the area. we did have a tornado watch briefly in effect for extreme southern portions of desoto county, and is all of south florida. you can see how fast that pushed through the area. flooding in portions of the yea bay area. maybe an inch or higher amounts. a tornado report around the cape coral area just a week after the tornado damage down there. and

business owners in venice are still cleaning up a big mess this morning after strong winds ripped apart the roof of a strip mall there. news channel 8's mary mcguire is joining us live in sarasota county. i know you've been standing throughout lo. >> it is looking pretty good right now. debris from the roof has actually been moved away from this area and now the sheriff tape is still up. i'm told that is a precautionary measure to make sure no one steps on the nails and other debris left behind this mess and initially, business owners here thought that a tornado hit this building but the national weather service is calling this thunderstorm wind damage after the winds ripped off parts of the roof, they were topping out at more than 45 miles an hour. the storms hit the tampa bay area around 11:00 yesterday morning. straight line winds ripped across parts of the roof and ripped it right off of the building as remnants landed on vehicles parked around the back of the building, large areas of the roof were left exposed. 20 customers were inside yummy's when this storm hit but none were hurt
