veronica pedrosa live for us at that airport in singapore. thank you so much for being with us this morning and keeping us updated. meanwhile, this has been a difficult time for south-east asia malaysia's government is pledging 142 million to help those displaced by flooding. up to s are under water after days of rain. thailand declaredate provinces disaster zones and officials are warping people to prepare for more rain fall. 180,000 people have been forced from their home and 30 killed in malaysia and thailand. as mentioned weather may have played a significant role in the disappearance. meteorologist nicole mitchell who plies into hurricanes is here to give us more light on this. >> in is tropical weather. you can see the moisture through the area. the tip of sing for - this time of year the intertropical convergens zone lifting into the atmosphere we have seen areas of rain and any flight nose it may be dealing with the weather. it's predominant as we get into january. then you look at the plans. they fly na different types of weather, th

as you can understand. >> thank you veronica ped prius ped royce. rosa. >> the area has been experiencing some severe weather recently. could the weather be a factor? >> we like to think the airlines are immune to these sorts of situations but that isn't the case. looks likely that's the case. satellite imagery, this area of clouds that have been running across the area. what i've got here is a pretty complicated report. it's a weather balloon report, up to 60, 70,000 feet and records the temperature and humidity all the way up. from shanghai the air was saturated all the way up. this was a solid wall of cloud which went up through the region and as a result we've got a risk of potentially very severe icing. as we look at the sequence of satellite imagery we have got clouds and pretty much intense. clouds associated with this sort of weather clouds up top hit by lightning that's not big deal. turbulence is a part of it as well. don't want to get passengers shaking around violently. icing is one of the major factors here. clouds to over 50,000 feet,

veronica reports. >> reporter: from the air and at sea, an intense search for missing flight air asia the airbus a 320 was carrying 162 people on the way to singapore. 42 minutes after takeoff, the aircraft lost communication with air traffic control. >> i hope for a miracle. may god save them all. i should have been with them as i cancelled two weeks ago. i had two friends on board with five family members. >> those with relatives on board have been demanding answers. indonesia's disaster management authorities quickly set up a crisis center at suribaya airport as help from foreign countries pour in. >> the national search and rescue agency the air force and navy had their orders. they deployed the fullest extent of our resources and equipment to find the missing aircraft. >> there issing little information. the plane lost contact as it flew over the java sea. the area was cloudy. airasia said the pilot requested to change course because of bad weather. this is where they were supposed to arrive, air transport authorities at singapor's airport say 47 next of kin approached them. they

good evening, i'm veronica de la cruz. >> i'm ken bastida.st of the nasty weather is over at least for now but we are stuck with plenty of damage. we begin our storm coverage with len ramirez in the south bay where the rain closed roads and shut down businesses. lenny. >> reporter: it's probably the calmest it's ever been in the last 48 hours up here in the santa cruz mountains giving the crews from pg&e time to get a head start on a lot of the work they will have to do picking up power lines and restoring power to thousands of people up here in the mountains. the wind and the rain hit the santa cruz mountains like a one- two punch a knockout blow to big trees like this one outside boulder creek it fell across highway 9 blocking it for hours and trapping this driver on the wrong side of the closure. >> i want to cry like really bad because i guess it's a good thing i left to run errands so now i can pick my other daughter up and all the kids that i give a ride to. >> reporter: falling trees caused pockets of power outages throughout the mount

veronica joins us from outside the airport in singapore.'s talk about the families of the passengers who have been at this airport all day today. now that the rescue operation has been suspended for the night, what is happening to them? how are they being cared for? >> from what we understand from the chinese air force officials they have been keeping the 47 relatives and friends who they have been looking after with blankets, food water, counselors in one specific relative's holding area for the entire day. a few hours ago, their final update was that none of them were in that area anymore. 16 of them had decided to take up the offer of transport to the seribia, the origin of the flight. the rest have gone home or to hotels to wait out the long hours until daylight when the search can begin again. the emphasys has been very much on keeping the relatives informed about what's happening in the rescue operation and sympathies from all of the government officials and the airasia officials has been going out to them. >> you mentioned aed in you

. >>> good evening, i'm veronica de la cruz.gin tonight in the weather center because the big story the entire bay area under a wind advisory. damaging winds bringing down trees and tying up traffic one of the biggest headaches winds bringing down a tree closing all lanes of i-80 in vallejo this afternoon. tonight we're hearing about a close call for some drivers. in the east bay, wind gusts strong enough to rip shingles from roofs in oakland. and the bay waters have been choppy all day. the wind whipping up whitecaps. some ferry service was canceled and tourists were told it was too rough for day cruises. brian hackney is in the weather center. we are talking gusts near 50 miles an hour around the bay. >> and higher gusts about 60 in the oakland hills. as we look at what's going to happen between now and midnight you can see that by then, forecast winds are still expected to be around 41 miles an hour in half moon bay, gusts up to 31 in san jose. so strong winds will continue for a while. peak wind gusts so far 43 miles an hour
