we move on to vermont. as you just mentioned bernie sanders has clearly won his home state, no numbers have yet come in but he is projected winner in vermont. in virginia on the democratic side, a big win for hillary clinton with 67% of the vote. compared to bernie sanders, 32%. on the republican side, it is still too close to call. donald trump in first place with 38% and marco rubio 31% and cruz with 17%. as we have been mentioning all afternoon the proportionate delegates in the states. this is super tuesday so it is not winner take all. donald trump, if ekes out a victory in virginia, he will get a proportion of the state's delegates and marco rubio coming in second, even coming in third in some of the states. will walk away with delegates that will help him in the long run as we head to the republican national convention in cleveland in july. >>> ken, we will bring in brian sobbal our political analyst any surprises. nothing for cruz and rubio, any surprises. >> no real surprises. certainly on the demo

that's vermont. let's move on. next republican state, virginia, a close contest, donald trump is at 37.2%. 30% for marco rubio. ted cruz only 17%. 83% of the vote is in. that's a lot. in oklahoma, only 7% of the vote is in, but donald trump maintains a slight lead over ted cruz. 33.6% to 27.6%. marco rubio, slightly behind, 24.6% in third place. in texas, a huge prize, all the polls in texas close at the top of the hour, but they release numbers already. polls in part of the state have closed. ted cruz maintaining his lead, 38.1%. donald trump, 28%. marco rubio, 20%. 17% of the vote is in in texas. that's the big prize of the night, 155 delegates at stake in texas. let's move on to the democratic side right now in massachusetts, hillary clinton maintaining a slight lead over bernie sanders, 51.2% to 47.8%. but it's very, very early. only 1% of the vote is in. in oklahoma, hillary clinton similarly maintaining a slight lead 50.1%, 43.9% for bernie sanders. 6% of the vote is in. in texas, remember, they close at the

in vermont, the rules say you need 20% or you get zero delegates. you can get some of the statewide delegates with 20%. 0 with 19%. trump leading the state slightly right now, had ewould benefit from that. not just in vermont, a small state we're seeing that. check this out. this is alabama. this is one of trump's best states delegate-wise tonight. big reason is marco rubio failed to hit the threshold. he did not get 20% in alabama. he will get zero of the statewide delegates. also in alabama, you need to be in the top two in congressional districts to get delegates there, or you need to be also over 20% there. not looking good for marco rubio on that front either. and then, of course, the mother of them all tonight, texas. you need to be in the top two in the 36 congressional districts there to be eligible for any of those 108 delegates. rubio may be second place in a couple districts. otherwise, shut out. and you need to be at 20% statewide to get any of the statewide delegates. he didn't do that. he also may have threshold issues when it comes to

vermont, he's right at the number.hat's one thing to keep in mind when we go to this next screen and give you the actual delegate estimates. this is where it stands. this is what nbc news is allocating to these candidates. but there'll be more coming in tonight. and when we look at all those states, look at the trump wins, look at rubio right now, seeming to do well in minnesota. the rough estimate we've come up with here at the end of the night, we think donald trump will be sitting somewhere around 350 total delegates in this thing. we think that ted cruz will be sitting somewhere around 195. again, winning texas is huge for him tonight. that accounts for the lion's share, the bulk of what he's putting up there. marco rubio, we think, is going to be somewhere north of 100. we're thinking about 115. john kasich will get a couple more too. but these are sort of the three big ones in contention right now. and in terms of where this goes from here, 1237, that's the number you need to be nominated, over the next week, we'

tonight reporters are on the campaign trail across the country from florida to vermont will start with heather hegedus and massachusetts voters were played a big role in this primary. >> got off the phone with the secretary of state again who was still predicting record voter turnout he is predicting 2 million vote by the end of tonight that would be surpassing the 2008 primary which was the last time we didn't have an incumbent who was running and got to take into consideration to that it's just 5 o'clock right now so we still haven't even seen a lot of people who are coming from work yet i also want to share in within the last few minutes that the city of boston 3:00 p.m. is reporting that 15,000 more voters have come out so far that in 2008. that benchmark year. one reason for this high turnout could be the sense that for the first time in a while massachusetts could really make an impact have a big role on the national scene. >> i think i'm going to vote for hillary. but i'm not decided yet. so when i walk and i think i make my decision she is 18 and voting for the very first time

and i think -- i hope that vermont efforts get me and that we can have a respectable showing. >> vermontof the plan this year for ohio governor john kasich. also, alaska, little shout out there. nobody ever thinks of alaska in a presidential election. but john kasich does. he's spending more than $4,000 there for the alaska caucuses tomorrow. he's spending the equivalent of this 2008 ford focus on radio ads in alaska. when he could be buying this 2008 ford focus instead. i submit to you humbly that in john kasich's sudden love for vermont and alaska in these otherwise mysterious political doings there lies a key to the republican presidential race right now. and it's this. over the past few days it's become clear that mathematically there's only two possibilities for this field. either donald trump wins enough delegates to lock up the nomination or nobody does, in which case the party's nominee is going to be decided at their convention this summer in cleveland. if it goes to a contested convention, there is a real path to the nomination for john kasich or for anybody. because if we're h

senator bernie sanders in vermont. he spent his entire adult life and public life, there with a lot of old friends as he carries his home state in theplal bid in -- in the approximately al bid in 2016. you're watching live coverage of super tuesday, 2016. we're about 12 minutes away from the big prize for tonight, the state of texas reporting its results. right now we're going to learn a little bit more about the first round of states. reporter: with regard to texas by the way, if you don't reach 20% of the vote on the republican side, then you don't get any delegates. some of the latest polls showing that senator rubio is at about 17% or 18%. that's something to keep an eye on. let's look at some of the very early results, beginning first in virginia and the republican race. where it has not yet been declared a winner. donald trump with only 1% of the vote reporting at 38.9%, compared to 30.3% for senator rubio and senator cruz getting 17.7%. some of the suburbs out of washington, d.c., going heavily for rubio, so tha

in vermont, bernie sanders' home state, he is the projected winner. sanders wins vermont. the massachusetts democratic primary right now, too early to call this one. we'll continue to watch that one. oklahoma, the same story there. too early to call this race between clinton and bernie sanders. we have got a lot to get to, a lot to talk about. our team is in place. let's start with the trump campaign and nbc's katy tur in palm beach. >> reporter: hello, lester. so far an outright win for donald trump in four out of the 11 states. you've got to imagine that the campaign is feeling good right now, hearing nbc news call out his name for four of those states. voting blocs in many of those states as he was doing in south carolina and new hampshire and in nevada. the campaign using their preferred method of communication, donald trump tweeting a thank you to all of those states. just take a look at the maps, and consider this. he's now won in the north with new hampshire and massachusetts, in the south with south carolina, alabama, tennessee, georgia, and in the west with nevada

vermont with kasich. now, if you're going to believe the polls, trump was supposed to run away with the majority of the delegates tonight and that could still happen. keep in mind there's been a lot of drama the past few days. trump refusing to immediately condemn the kkk. that got a lot of headlines. rubio has also been going after him hard. but it would take a major upset for him not to win the majority of delegates tonight. regardless the campaign is looking forward to states that vote in the next few days, states that vote in the next few weeks. they're also looking ahead to the general election, promising to go after hillary clinton hard, to bring up her e-mail scandal every single day. they think she is a flawed candidate. to put this in a little bit of perspective, this is a campaign that started out with very little organization, a campaign that started out with no backing from the republican establishment, a campaign that still is getting a lot of hostility from the republican establishment, a ca

winning vermont and oklahoma as well. tonight, i want to go to david wright who's at the bernie sanders' victory celebration in vermont. >> good evening, george, this was an early night for bernie sanders hp he was the first candidate of all of them to come tonight. coming out after his one slam-dunk of the evening, his home state of vermont. justify, rationalize his continued presence in the campaign. on the plus side, he said today, that he will finish the night with hundreds of new delegates. and he also, his campaign announced new fund-raising totals today. for the second month in a row, they're outfund-raising hillary clinton. in february alone, he raised $42.7 million, most of that in small donations, averaging 27 bucks apiece. he says he has the means to continue in this fight. >> enough money to go all of the way to the convention. i want to go david muir, you're going through the exit polls on how hillary clinton put this together. >> the coalition that led to these victories tonight. she led among men by 53% to
