the vermont digger.org has a headline that you are saying the senate gmo proposal writing vermont is the first state to require food companies to label products with genetically engineered ingredients. there are ongoing efforts in congress to derail the state labelling mandate. where does that stand now? >> the house passed a bill that called it the dark act to get rid of vermont's law and give a free ride so that there would be no labelling. the senate didn't do that. they passed legislation where there would be labelling but it would be obscure and hard to read. gmo labelling is like 64 countries have labelling. it is no big deal. a lot of folks who like gmos are bragging about it. i would wonder why wouldn't they want to advertise it. people what is in the food they buy and they should have that right. 64 countries do. the vermont law would give them that right. the senate bill is saying we will better have a national standard. i agree with that. the standard in the senate bill is either the manufacturer can put english language label on with a symbol or with words or they can put

in vermont alone, the vermont law, it will increase the average cost per household in vermont alone by $2,000 a year. there are people struggling to pay for the food that they have. there are people right now that are trying to decide do they pay to heat their home or eat. now we're talking about raising it for some of the poorest people up $2,000 a year? complexity equates to cost. this provides clarity. and i'm going to talk a little bit about that but i do really appreciate senator roberts and senator stabenow for getting those of us who are willing to work together, who are willing to say to people at either end of the spectrum, guys, we're going to come up with a compromise and solve this problem. we have that opportunity before us now. and i hope that we'll get to an affirmative vote later today. but we've got to get to something simple. now, i think that as i said earlier, the state-by-state patchwork, if you imagine this is what vermont decided to do. what about california? what about my state of north carolina, all the other ones? some people say, well, you're preempting state

let's not roll over the top of vermont. and maybe there's a couple of other senators who have things that would improve this. how about an amendment that would actually put in the same authority to levy fines that we have on the country of origin labeling law. i have that amendment. what about a vote on that amendment? these should be things that we could come together on because if you truly want to have a national labeling standard, you want a definition that has integrity, a definition that's consistent with what is commonsly understood to be a -- commonly understood to be a g.m.o. you want to have a label that indicates there's g.m.o. ingredients inside because that's authenticity. you want to have the ability to have the u.s. department of agriculture lerve eye a fine if people -- levy a fine if people disobey the laws so it has some teeth in it, has some compelling force. that's what i'm asking for. let's have a vet on -- vote on several basic amendments rather than blindly embracing ignorance and denying americans th
