vernon: selma was a crucial struggle. it was a moment where it took us that giant step, because selma led to the voter rights act of 1965. there is a historic notion that the voting rights act of 1965 was passed by the congress here in washington dc. the fact of the matter is, the voting rights act of 1965 was written on the road from selma to montgomery. and all washington did was to formalize our information the to -- informality to put the wherefores and the therefores, the periods and semi-colons. but the actual law was written by those marches from selma to montgomery. it is an affirmation of the notion that government is, by its very nature, a reacting entity, not an initiative entity. government when lyndon johnson was before the government was responding to the marches from selma to montgomery. but the law was written on that 40 mile route. al: that march took place two weeks after bloody sunday and was led by dr. martin luther king. today a lot of americans know dr. king was a great orator. they have hurt the spe

vernon. mt. vernon is owned and operated by the mt. vernon's lady's association. and the first time i went there, i wanted to sit on the back porch, the piazza, and watch the sun come up. i did that. i got up at 4:30 one morning. and it was dark and i made my way there and i sat down at the -- on the far right side and watched the sun come up over the potomac river. and for a biographer like myself, there has to be a moment when i really connect with my subject and for me, that moment was right here. i saw this incredible sunrise come over the potomac river, and i realized how many times must george washington have seen this very sight? and for me, it was a moment that he became real. in my research, he really became more and more real the more i researched his life. here is a close-up of young george. and in each of these periods of time that i talk about in the book, i really like to sort of sum up what george washington was like. at this point in his life, in the years that he's a man he ended up to be about 6'2", a ruddy complexion with chestnut colored hair.

a sadder legacy for mount vernon. there were slaves who descended from mount vernon. how was that possible? didn't george washington famously free his slaves in his will? he did free his own slaves but what he couldn't do much as he wanted to do, he couldn't free his wife's waves and some of those slaves became the property of george washington's adopted son. lee himself thought that slavery was an evil institution. you shouldn't make the mistake he was an abolitionist which was not an abolitionist. he did pray god would end slavery but he thought it was worse for whites ban slaves themselves which is an attitude that is hard for us to understand but he wanted nothing to do with his institution. he tried his hardest to avoid it as much as possible. what ultimately in tables him in the institution of slavery is his father-in-law died in 1857 and he leaves a will naming robert e. lee as executor of state that includes slaves who are descended from mount vernon. on the eve of the civil war robert e. lee is managing states that include slaves the george washington had wan

vernon odem is at the hospital where the firefighters are being treated at this hour. we begin david henry at the scene where they were injured. >> reporter: sayer ra, first the -- sarah first the good news the injuries are non-life threatening. an investigation is underway. the fire was out and the firefighters were breaking down an aluminum ladder when it hit the power line. we talked with a witness who saw it happened. >> the fireman was the only one holding it, his body stiffed and he fell right back. it was unbelievable sight. >> reporter: it is not clear where the second injured firefighter was at the time. the other firefighters immediately started administering first aid before medics arrived and rushed both men to temple university hospital. the fire started around 9:30 a.m. and was declared under control 7 minutes later. around 10:00 a.m. the firefighters started breaking down the scene and removing a ladder to the second floor. it came in contact with a 7600 volt power line. >> he went from holding the ladder to dropping down to the side of his body and he p

live in the courthouse in media, vernon odom, channel6 "action news." >> vernon thank you. >>> a policeon the mend this afternoon after a chain reaction crash in bucks county. and police believe the driver who caused it all was intoxicated. the crash happened last night on route 1 near route 13 in falls township. falls township officer tom lundquist had pulled over a car for speeding. as he went to talk to the driver a third vehicle hit the back of his patrol car pushing the cruiser into the first vehicle. lundquist and all three cars were pushed about 20 feet down the road. the department says it's lucky lundquist wasn't riding with his normal partner trigger. >> ironically the beginning of this tour tonight our partner had his canine partnerly he had to kennel his dog and take his substitute vehicle. he did not take his dog with him. if his dog were with him he would be dead. >> lundquist escaped the wreck with a sprained wrist. five others were taken to the hospital including richard morales the driver of that third car. he's in serious condition after his head went through the winds
