veronica johnson is kicking it off with a closer look at isaac's path. >> the latest with isaac still at tropical storm status. the winds at 70 miles an hour on the verge of being a hurricane. the winds need the be 74 miles an hour for that. is it in the gulf of mexico. the track is more to the northwest. while it has been wobbling to the west today. it would bring it in around new orleans in the early morning hours on wednesday. while there hasn't been strengthening with isaac what i'm seeing is it is going to be pulling in around new orleans as a category 1 storm instead of a category 2. but the winds out of the east will for several hours batter over lake pontchartrain with a lot of rain falling out of the storm em. >>> florida may have been spared the worst of isaac but it spawned a tornado earlier today. dozens of homes damaged. many without power. and in new orleans they are watching and waiting to see if the levies will hold. >> reporter: normally a sign of hope. this rainbow over the mississippi lake monday is nowhere near enough to provide comfort for some in the path of isaa

veronica johnson joins us with the first word. >> we've been watching quite a bit of cloud cover. it's the cloud cover that's kept our storms from happens. in other words, the heating hasn't really had it today. take a look at the satellite and radar loop. we're finally starting to see more and more breaks around the area, especially from fred ricks, and back off to the west. it's the breaks that give way to a bit of heating and the possibility of those storms forming, as the cold front starts to step into our area. just north of petersburg, we have thunderstorms extending up into western maryland. i do think we have a chance, really a better chance coming our way after 5:00 and 6:00 p.m., lasting until about 10:00 or 11:00 p.m. the radar loop going down to petersburg, so now rather quiet across the area. after about 5:00, 6:00, the possibility of some strong storms that could be bringing heavy rain to the area. we'll get some lightning and possibly high winds. we're at 82 in gaithersburg, 86 in culpepper, 85 in la plata, so warming up in some areas. there's your storms on your go

we have coverage from storm 4 meteorologist veronica johnson and doug. >> hello, barbara, we are right now along the mississippi river just in the downtown area of new orleans. you can see the downtown area behind me. what you are seeing are some outer rain bands coming through. winds only 20, 25 miles per hour and we haven't seen the whole way of wind just yet and i don't expect it to pick up until 7:00, 8:00 tonight. what we are in now will continue to be some of that heavy rain. earlier a band that would come through and then we'll see some sunshine and now, however, i think we'll be pretty much in the rain right on through, not just tonight, not just tomorrow but potentially right on through the day on thursday and that's what makes this storm very, very diffent eran a katrina, which came through very, very quickly. the big deal was the storm surge and here it is the rain and the inland flooding that is a bigger problem. you can see inheavier rain coming in right now. let's look at the radar picture and you can see where this storm is. right now to the south and east of new orleans

it is already causing flooding in parts of florida storm team 4 meteorologist veronica johnson with the latest. >> that's right, wendy, parts of florida today had more than 10 inches of rain. sometime later tonight, early tomorrow morning it's expected to be -- its winds in and out at 70 miles per hour. right there is the track sometime late tuesday night, early wednesday morning, the wee hours of the morning around 1:00 a.m. wednesday. it perhaps will make landfall perhaps somewhere near new orleans. perhaps even a category 2 storm, where its winds could be up to 96 to 110 miles per hour. this will be no catrino for them, but still quite a bit of rain that comes in with isaac, as it makes its way north and west. you can see the heaviest bands of rain off the coast of florida, while some of the northwest rain is just starting to touch louisiana. this will be a major storm system for louisiana, as it will be areas of mississippi, and even alabama. we'll talk about how much rain areas of new orleans could get, as well as how much rain we could see here, perhaps coming up with the next sto

ver veronica johnson in with me now. >> we're seeing the cell south of the prince frederick area. it's about ready to make the way north and northwestward over 231. it will be making its way up near hughesville. from what i understand this is based on radar? >> this is confirmed. this is a confirm on the ground tornado right now. once again right around the hallowing point region. can you see that around birch and along 231 here. if you live in this area, if you live in this area, you need to get inside. not only inside, but in an interior room in your house. if you have a basement, get to the basement right now. once again, a confirmed tornado on the ground. here's the good piece of this. we're talking about this tornado. but these types of tornadoes are going to be fairly weak. we're talking about tornadoes of 80 to 100 miles an hour winds. we're not talking about major tornadoes. again, any time you have a tornado, 80, 90 mile an hour winds will take down trees. it will break windows. it will produce some damage in that area. so please, if you're in this area, is right on the b
