veronica johnson has spoke to v-dot today about its expectations for road conditions tomorrow morning. the roads after the storm stopped a couple of hours ago, they're still pretty bad. >> reporter: they are still pretty bad. that's the thing. this is the intersection of spelt run and lee highway. and in fact the sidewalks are faring a lot better than the actual road. still covered with a lot of slush around here as we made our way over to this area. this is what most of the roads actually look like. in fact i stood out here just a couple of minutes ago. yes, they're slushy. i've got some infrared thermometer where i've been taking a temperature reading. watching the road surface temperature continue to drop. right now actually at around 35 36 degrees. but again, it will continue to drop as we head up the road toward the north there for the 66 on ramp. you can see cars making their way through, yes, no issues they're going at a fairly decent speed, too. but i think the real problem as we head southbound down lee highway tomorrow morning will be the inclines the ramps, the hills, becau

veronica johnson joins us with another update. how about it? >> seeing that back edge on the whole line now advance from west to east. pretty quickly now. you can see it there, frederick, warrenton, arias like charlottesville, current ti. that's what's going to be making its way on out of here very shortly, folks, between now and about 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. those areas extreme down to the south and west. next cold air will be moving in. i do mean cold. record cold temperatures dropping to the single digits and some areas well to the north and west. factor in the wind we'll have behind the system. not a tremendous amount of wind but over 20 miles per hour. that's really going to bring down the windchill values. 5 to 15 below is what it's going to feel like early tomorrow morning. look at this tomorrow morning, 14 in d.c. 12 la plata and waldorf, 9 in gaithersburg. that's the cold air that's coming our way. by afternoon, 24 to 29 degrees. i know another cold day for us. but, yeah, the kids will be able to get out and play. we'll have sunshine ac

let's get to storm team 4 meteorologist veronica johnson in the weather center. how cold v.j.? >> last night we saw temperatures throughout the area drop to the single digits and teens. and here we go again tonight. so anything snowwise that wasn't cleaned up today, and we did have melting from the stronger march sunshine, yes, that's only going to refreeze. talk about the snow from yesterday, 4.8 inches record for national for baltimore and dulles too, 6.2 baltimore marshall 9.5 inches of snow there in dulles. but look at this. the snow throughout the area. that's the dark xwlublue covering the ground with the higher amounts to the west. itted to show you this map because more than 50% of the nation is covered in snow today. that is remarkable. pattern change for us and it all has to do with the big thaw. springlike temperatures coming our way and it will be sooner than you think. might even be able to do a wardrobe change. but look at 11:00 p.m. 23. we'll talk more about that cold coming our way tonight in a few. >>> we just learned what's been causing a bit of a traffic tie-

let's get the first word from storm team 4 meteorologist veronica johnson. tell us the time line. >> maybe we should flip it around so that it says wet and then wintry because tomorrow is going to be very wet and i really think it's the afternoon that's going to be impact the great fres the wet weather that will be moving in. your afternoon rush from merely rain. right now, take a look. storm team 4 radar, all this pink you're seeing coming through howard county montgomery county prince george's county notice how it still is building off to the west some into areas even loudoun county a little bit right inside the beltway. now we have rain showers just to the north, though stale lilt bit of freezing rain. very light, up around 270 and eastern side of 495 right now. we still need to take it easy this evening. but it is a minimal event for us that maybe low to moderate impact event for us. tomorrow which umbrella? you're going to have to have the big umbrella tomorrow. the drops will really be hitting hard by the time we get to 2:00 3:00 in the afternoon, and

veronica johnson, we've been looking at this all afternoon, and v.j.t is a huge factor when that cold air moves in. >> that's right. we think right now that cold air is going to move the early, areas from northwest to southeast, put a graphic together for you to show you the cold air, the temperatures below freezing making their way into northern maryland. take a look around gaithersburg. this is at 1:00 a.m. thursday morning. temperatures dropping from north-south. so if it does here's the way it's looking for how much snoesm we're going to get and the highest probability, a 70% chance the cold air gets here early that we'll see between 5 and 8 inches of snow. lower probabilities 10% to 20% we'll see anywhere from 3 to 5 or 2 to if that cold gets here late and mixes with sleet, your chances go up for, saipe, about 3 to 5 inches of snow, a lot less. doug? >> right now we are thinking that cold air will arrive early. but we still have time to make this forecast. the snowfall total amounts are our first call. 46 on your wednesday, 29 for a high on thursd

let's begin with storm team 4 meteorologist veronica johnson. how sit look veronica? >> right now we've got rain falling on most roads across our area right now. we start out not only talking about the rain but the fog because that is going to be a big issue as we get into the overnight period. let me show you the forecast here going out this evening. yes, steady rain. we've had some occasional showers today, but that rain becoming more uniform and steady. 47 degrees the temperature. the mercury will be holding steady. fog starts thickening becoming dense by around 9:00 10:00. it continues throughout the overnight period. here's storm team 4 radar. rain all the way down i-95 up toward hagerstown 72 70 95 all wet, in fact moderate rain right inside the beltway between bethesda and clinton, all pushing off to the east to areas like west laurel and bowie right are where that accident is. a tenth of an inch of rain. we could pick up another quarter to a third of an inch. i'll tell you the impact this additional rain will have on area roads, on neighborhoods. we'll talk ab

veronica johnson, is there an end to this? >> the cancellations, delays back in the forecast. we're just so tired of this right? it's been an annoying winter. give us snow but not the freezing rain. for tomorrow winter weather advisory starts early, 9:00 a.m. continues throughout the day until 10:00 p.m. for pretty much the entire viewing area and that is because we have the threat of not just freezing rain back in the forecast but some light snow some sleet as well. we'll talk more about the timing of that system and the impact on the evening rush and roads coming up. but for this evening, our temperatures shot way up into the mid-40s. look at this 7:00 35 degrees. we'll drop to the upper 20s, cold yes. icy refreeze. behind me this is a snapshot of tomorrow. this system has it moves in will be providing not just the freezing rain and sleet to some portions of this area but all the way to the north into pennsylvania. we'll talk about this system, the one that follows that could bring some heavy rain or snow all coming up in a couple minutes. >> thanks veronica. >>> first at 4,

meteorologist veronica johnson is in the storm center. tell us about the time line v.j. >> right around the corner guys. some wet weather and that means wet roads here for the latter part of the evening rush and especially throughout the day tomorrow. in fact i've been tracking that rain here on storm team 4 satellite and radar for you. yes, we had the clouds that moved in. a little bit of sunshine earlr part of the day. here's where the leading edge is. garrett county same thing around page county orange county leading edge of light showers. you folks probably getting the sprinkles. by 8:00 9:00, that rain arrives here and once it does we're talking about a pretty soggy overnight period. your temperatures coming down from 49 des at 7:00 to 46 degrees at 11:00 p.m. as it gets wet, with our temperatures remaining in mostly the low to mid-40s across the area we'll see some thick, soupy fog across the area a half-mile visibility by 6:00 a.m. and it will improve very slowly by late morning. i'll take you hour by hour through your neighborhood

veronica johnson has more on that. >> i think our temperatures aren't going to be any lower, doug than say 32 degrees in most neighborhoods. we'll be between that 32 35 35-degree pocket for most of the morning, the critical time period 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. warrenton, out 66 for arias of 81 south headed down into spots like luray and for 70 up around north of rockville, winchester the high impact area there. this is where there is more likely to be delays across the area. temperatures critical. here's a look at 4:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. we're right at 34 degrees, gaithersburg and leesburg. by the time we get to 9:00 i think temperatures will start coming up and road conditions even the areas up north that will be slippery will start improving quickly. >> yeah. that's the thing with this storm. it may snow around your area and by noon it's just about out of here. you may not have any snow on your lawn at all around 3:00 or 4:00. 51 degrees on sunday pap pretty nice weekend. next week starting cool but then warming quickly up to 62 degrees next wednesday. guys? >> thanks guys. >>> bitter
