steve: that is the job of a vice presidential candidate to go on the attack.crosby: absolutely. >> i was a delegate to the convention from douglas county, where i was a student at ku. two comments come house talking with neil ferguson, the historian, who said i'm not an american, i'm just researching american politics for the first time. i said there was a lot of relaxed behavior that went on 40 years ago. i said, just because we had kegs of beer on the floor -- and you're absolutely right as to who made this comment. if you watch the clips on c-span of the 76 convention, everybody is smoking cigars, chain smoking camels. it was unbelievable, it just seemed natural. and people sort of felt that what went on in kansas city stayed in kansas city, it was a vegas type atmosphere. ferguson told me there was one problem, a state chairman who had his wife at the ground center hotel and his girlfriend in a winnebago at the kemper arena. as one of my late father said, he brave, he real brave. another thing is, security was so relaxed you just passed your badge around.

when you think of a vice presidential candidate, you want them to fill gaps. young. conservative so the presidential candidate can be a moderate. brings a western state in. energetic. the second leading public face for anti-communism in the country at the time. nixon was an absolutely perfect choice. he doesn't look too excited, does he? on the other side of the coin, i type in democratic convention, and what do i get? the successful movement to draft eisenhower. what's with wikipedia, anyway? this myth also needs to be undone, but it's kind of harder than it is with ike. because ike was a candidate and stevenson never was. there was a draft movement. it was run by walter johnson. the history professor from the university of chicago, but it did not draft stevenson. this is what i thought happened. that harry truman stepped out in suddenly said, you're my boy. but that's not what happened. what happened -- and the story is much more complicated -- is that a group of labor leaders go to alben barkley who's got harry truman's word that he's going to support him, and thos

democratic vice presidential nominee tim kaine is campaigning in the valley today. he's focusing on hillary clinton's economic plan. "i believe in her. i trust her. i trust her values. i support her canidacy, and hillary clinton is the most qualified person to run for president of this country in a very long time. kaine spoke at the international iron convention at the mirage. he was joined by his father - al kaine - who owned a union-organized ironwork and welding shop in missouri. congresswoman dina titus and senate canidate cathrine cortez- masto were at the convention showing their support. kaine also held a rally for union workers. the clark county district attorney ruled the police shooting of an unarmed man last year was justified. police shot and killed 23-year-old keith childress in december. that ruling was reviewed at a killed new years eve last year. this is body cam footage of that day....it shows him ignoring the officer's demands. the d-a's office ruled the shooting was justified...and today's review was supposed to address public concerns. democratic vice presidential nominee, senator tim kaine, attacked trump for his alleged support from white supremacist groups. the virgina senator campaigned for hillary clinton in florida yesterday. he said he's concerned what could happen if someone with those ties won the presidency. "he's got guys connected with klu klux klan who are out, they are claiming him. and his record of, you know, sometimes he doesn't disabuse that, sometimes he wants to take advantage of that. and i find that very troubling. " to speak with the f-b-i on saturday. she arrived at their facility in white plains, new york yesterday for her first national security briefing as a presidential nominee. clinton received similar briefings while she worked as secretary of state under president obama. trump received his briefing earlier this month. back in iowa, a new study shows private well water could be dangerous to drink. the university of iowa study looked at 475 private wells across the state between 2006 the study found nearly 12 percent of wells had unsafe levels of nitrate. 8 percent had unsafe levels of
