abc 7 news reporter vick lee is live there with the story. ick. >> dan firefighters had a tough time trying not only to extinguish the fires but to find them. a suspected arsonist was always behind them setting one fire after another. he's been arrested on arson charges. >>> the fi2tñ is call came in this afternoon. as firefighters battled this blaze, multiple calls were coming in reporting another fire in the smalling kondo complex. then a report of yet another town house burning and then another. in all, five structures here were ablaze at the same time. and that was the biggest problem firefighters encountered. >> so it wasn't like you had one fire and it went from building to building. it was if you had a fire and it was located in one building, then you had another fire that was in another building and at another location and address. >> while firefighters were trying to contain the ever expanding blaze, martinez police were trying to find the tenant who may have set them. >> one of the officers realized we had' today to do a welfare chec

vick lee is in richmond with details. >> the shooting happened right over there right behind me right by that drive way, in front of that silver suv. if you can zoom in slowly. you can see three investigators from the d.a.'s office one of them is from the csi, what they're doing now is removing crucial evidence from in front of that suv between the two tires, i believe you can still see the evidence markers the yellow evidence markers, at one point until very recently. there was a gun, a gun reportedly carried by the suspect a cell phone and peaces of closing they are very carefully removing that evidence and putting them in evidence bags. the shooting happened about 1:30 this afternoon. here's how police say it went down. >> the police chief arrived at the crime scene shortly after the shooting. police cordoned off the area, while the investigation continued. the officer whose name has not been released was patrolling the area which has had a rash of robberies in recent weeks. he reportedly saw someone standing by a drive way acting suspiciously. the officer then got out of his patro

vick lee spoke to hal bower. vick? >> larry, i do remember as a young reporter covering some of these murders. of course, at the time no one linked them together. i do remember that parents with daughters on the peninsula were extremely scared because those murders happened one after another. there was no dna technology to speak of at the time. it was the brilliant work of police investigators and their tenacity and, of course, dna science that made the difference here. january 1976 18-year-old veronica casio's body was found at the sharp park golf course in pacifica. she was stabbed 32 times and raped. a year later paula baxter's body was discovered. this man 66-year-old rodney howbauer was formally charged with the cold case murders. this is how he looked years ago, his mugshot from an unrelated crime. steve credits the advances in technology with solving the cold cases. cigarette butts left at the two crime scenes contained his dna. >> it's time to bring this man to justice for the murders that we can clearly prove

abc7 news reporter vick lee is live from montgomery street with the latest on this really outrageous>> reporter: dan the good thing in this story is that the stagecoach is still in the museum. the thieves did not touch that. as you said they got the gold. it was daring. it was bold. it was right in the early morning hours. >> the front door of the wells fargo bank. >> reporter: it happened just after 2:30 this morning. the sufficient crashed into the revolving glass doors of the wells fargo museum. >> three suspects involved wearing ski masks hoodies, and blue jeans. >> reporter: the three got out held a security guard at gunpoint, and made off with gold nuggets from a display case. they escaped in a car and vanished. this is the fifth robbery in the city since november where thieves have used a car as a battering ram. among them a robbery of a patagonia store in january when the crooks backed a u-haul through the store and stole pricey good. in november thieves crashed their car into a chanel boutique and made off with designer handbags. no one's been arrested in the robberies. one
