the former head of the police in redlands, california, also cnn's victor blackwell, anchoring for us from a different part of the location, where the home was that started the entire chase. victor, first, just to get a sense. that's where it all changed. they went from being on the search to being in the hunt. what happened there? >> well, certainly, when officials were told by the san bernardino police chief, jarrod burguan, got some information, a lead, that this address was connected to syed farouk. officers traveled here. they noticed a black suv with utah tags, slow down, kind of pass them at a really slow pace and then race off and then the chase was on. it didn't last very long. about a quarter mile. that's where everything ended with that shootout with about 20 police officers. syed farouk, 27 years old and tashfeen malik, 28 years old, both died in that vehicle. there was something thrown out of the vehicle. at the time, it was thought it was a pipe bomb. later determined to be fake. but let me give you an idea of what's been happening here since. there was a search overnight

victor blackwell live in redlands, california, where police drought down the shooters and it was really hunt. victor tell us about it. >> first, in just the last few minutes investigators are now returned to this neighborhood. we've seen several go back inside the home of at least one of the shooters here. we know that overnight bomb technicians worked to give the home the full all clear of any explosives. they searched a vehicle outside. but we know as we give you a live look now of the investigators going in and out, that the search for evidence to answer the question you posed at the top of the broadcast, "why?" and if there is anyone else, maybe someone supporting the two that carried out this terrible massacre. >> two shooters in san bernardino's mass shooting identified. say yesterday rizwan farook and his wife were shot dead in this man hunt. >> until we know the motive or really have a clear, something clear evidentiary based on that motive, i just don't want to weigh in on that right now. we have not ruled out terrorism. >> reporter: the massacre began around 11:00 a.m. the hea

let's begin our coverage with cnn's victor blackwell, live in redlands, california, outside that hometor? >> we learned from law enforcement forces that the fbi is interviewing relatives these two and they are cooperating. we're also learning indications of the ledges to which these two went to cover their tracks, apparently. more clues unearthed but still no clear motive. among the latest discoveries, two smashed cell phones, believed to belong to syed rizwan farook and his wife, tashfeen malik. also found, a computer with a missing hard drive. investigators believe a hard drive may have been removed or destroyed to potentially cover their tracks. they are issuing subpoenas to major service providers to retrieve information. >> if you look at the amount of preplanning that went in, there was an obvious mission here. we know that. we do not know why. it would be irresponsible and premature of me to call this terrorism. >> reporter: law enforcement sources say rizwan farook seems to have been radicalized and had contact with terror suspects. the fbi and white house cautious not to rule

the details we have coming in, let's get to victor blackwell, he's following all of this.hat we know so far. >> a collection of accounts from local police and employee there is in the mall and eyewitnesss. what we know is this happened at the north lake mall there in charlotte, north carolina, just after 2:00 today. we're told there was a confrontation outside of the journey's store, which is a shoe store. there was a confrontation and at one point a man pulled out a gun. we know that there was an officer-involved shooting and one person was shot by an officer. now there are conflicting reports from our affiliates there on the condition of that person who was shot, but we know that one person was shot there. we do not know about arrests. we don't know about other injuries. we're told there were some evacuations there at the mall. we have from one of the persons who was shopping there who heard the gunshots there, she said it was a boom, boom, boom. she thought it was scaffolding fall iing and then realized the were gunshots. employees started to pull down the gates and clo
