good morning to you, i'm christi paul, victor blackwell, my colleague, in miami. lready feeling the first traces of irma already this morning. >> yeah, the wind has certainly picked up in the last few minutes, but believe us -- this is smog compared to what is coming. you may see a few flashes of lightning behind me over miami beach, so, be prepared for those as well. this storm is on the way. the brunt of it coming in the next 24 hours. it's now a category 4 strength. but don't find any comfort in the downgrade. because it's sustained winds at 155 miles an hour. two miles more, it's back to category 5. cuba felt that strength with winds 160 miles per hour. it's expected to slam florida tomorrow morning with screaming winds, heavy rain. storm surge as high as 12 feet. more than 5 million people in florida have been ordered to evacuate, a stretching across myriad of counties along the east and west coasts and scrambling into crowded shelter, jamming highways as well, trying to get as far inland as possible. and governor rick scott this morning and throughout the day

i'm victor blackwell in tampa. we are literally right now along the hillsboro river in the eye of the storm. least what's left of irma's eye. no rain at moment. but we know that back half of this storm is coming and bring a lot of wind and rain with it. the rest of tampa should know that as well. let's go to stephanie elam. before this calm period started, the wind was rough, rain was heavy and we know it is going to start again. >> yes. no doubt about it, victor. when we first came out i was soaking wet and now that we are are in this eye part of the storm my jack set drying out. it is like i'm in a blowdryer. which is kind of nice because it has been kind of cold. we never lost power in downtown tampa. i've been out here all night and power has been here the entire time. the fear is it might be out not just for a couple of days but for weeks depending on how severe it was. that's not the case. didn't even see it flicker. i did see earlier tonight a couple of "transformers" blue. but there hasn't been an issue wit

victor blackwell is in the thick of it in miami this morning. hurricanes now taking its first slice at florida. victor, good morning to you. how are you doing? >> we're good. we're good. a little wind, a little rainy, but what's coming to florida this is crystal clear it's going to happen quickly. the breaking news this morning, very powerful category 4 hurricane on a new track this morning and it's headed this way, of course, we're talking irma. this deadly storm is scheduled to make landfall in the florida keys sometime early sunday. the latest track puts the west coast of florida in line for much of what the worst of irma will bring. we're talking from fort myers through sarasota, st. petersburg, tampa as well. florida's governor. the mayors across this state are pleading with people still in evacuation zones. those mandatory evacuation zones do get out and get out now. hundreds of people, thousands of people across the state are headed to county shelters. and some people spent the night on the west coast sleeping in their cars on the side of

. >> i'm victor blackwell. breaking news this morning, another powerful earthquake has rocked mexico. this one comes as a magnitude 6.1. >> a slight tremor was felt in mexico city, that's hundreds of miles away. rescue operations were briefly halted. you can see workers here moving off the rubble where they were working. let's get to meteorologist allison chinchar in our media center. is this an aftershock? >> it appears to be an aftershock, the question is of which quake is it an aftershock for. magnitude 6.1 and very, very shallow of an earthquake. depth only 9 kilometers, that's only 5.5 miles deep. that may seem like a lot, but in earthquake scale that's not even close. anything 70 kilometers or lower is considered shallow. so the fact that we're not even at 10 kilometers just goes to show you how shallow this particular earthquake is. now, where that plays in effect is in the damage because the closer they are to the surface, the more likely they are to cause damage. and that damage can be more widespread
