mary's cathedral for a memorial in honor of tony and vincent. they were fighting a fire in a four-story home on berkeley way last thursday. they just left station 26. the past week has been extremely painful for the department and for firefighters across the country. now, crews from across the bay area will pay tribute to the san francisco fire department by filling in during their shifts today. >> coming in here to help. unfortunately, in this tragic circumstances, all of us, we are a family. to be able to help in any way we can, it's an honor. it really is. >> reporter: the cause of the fire is still under investigation. an electrical malfunction is being looked at at this point. the san francisco fire department is looking over the procedures to see if anything needs to change to prevent this tragedy from happening again. the briefing begins at 6:30. it's where they will get their assignments and roll out into the streets of san francisco. some of the streets will be closed today. let's go to mike inouye for details. mike. >> good morning. ou

. >> reporter: the small fire grew to an inferno within seconds and took the life of lieutenant vincent perez, a 21- year veteran of san francisco fire and san francisco native. flags all over the city and the fire station 26 where he worked are being flown at half-staff. a sad reminder of a life taken too soon. >> he was a great guy. he always lightened up the mood at the firehouse. he had a good sense of humor. and as a firefighter, he was always kind of the first guy in the fire and the last guy out. he was a real firefighter's firefighter. >> reporter: the firefighters were hurt in what's known as a flashover, heat so intense, the room can spontaneously ignite. the chief said while they have a team working around the clock determine a cause, she has yet to visit the scene. her focus is on the victims. >> we are devastated, you know? this is a tough time. since i have been chief we have never had a line of duty death. >> reporter: and a third firefighter, a female firefighter, tracy courtney, was also injured in this fire. we understand not bad hurt. she was released from the hospita

vincent perez lost that battle. the cause of death is not officially determined but you can say perez died on the job trying to protect others. another one was injured. they responded to a house call yesterday morning at 10:45. a woman and three children inside got out unhurt. perez and two other firefighters were on the first floor of this four-story building where all three were caught in a flashover. that is a sudden increase in temperatures caused by particles in the air. firefighters said temperatures during flashovers can reach 1,000 degrees fahrenheit. >> he served val yently in the san francisco fire department for 21 years. he was a classmate of mine. we started off in 1990. >> the world has lost a great man, a great firefighter, lieutenant. >> reporter: it wasn't just friends or chief hayes who went to the fire academy with lieutenant perez. it was other firefighters across san francisco and people who didn't even know him mourning his loss. this morning the investigation is underway. it led to the death o
