traffic is in your favor in maryland and virginia. back to the news desk. >> i want to show you the storm scan. we have clouds starting to stream in. precipitation is down to our south and west. we will see it develop through central virginia through the morning hours and start to push into the metro area. you can see how much moisture, there is with this system. there is quite a bit. it is down in the south and transferring its energy to the coast. we will tap into the moisture and pull in that cold air. i think tonight from 7:00 p.m. the heaviest bands of snow will fall. it will come down with some gusty winds. travel will be impacted. let's go to the maps to ensure the winter storm warning. it starts this morning down to the south through central virginia around 10:00. it affects all of laws. temperatures in some places above freezing. -- it affects all of us. temperatures will drop back. it will push into the metro around lunchtime and become heavier through the evening and drive time. temperatures dropping into the 20's. we're th

six to six and a half inches of snow in gerardstown, west virginia. a quick hitter and the storm is long gone. and the next storm is just starting to develop across the south and southwest texas. we'll talk more about that coming up at 6:15. temperature-wise this morning. 20s to low 30s out there, although culpeper is at 19 degrees. fredericksburg and pa tux sen river 33. same with national. some areas are wet and sloppy. some areas are frozen and foggy. you see culpeper, zero mile visibility reported there. orange, virginia has a quarter mile visibility. half mile at dulles. so that's sort of north gaithersburg almost to ladensburg. watch out north and west of town. very dense fog and definitely be a problem for the next few hours, probably until 8:00 or so. after that visibility should improve and we are expecting at least maybe some peeks of sunshine. forecast for today, clouds slow to break. mid-30s for 9:00, upper 40s at. we will be okay today. okay tomorrow. but by friday, problems return and could be some big problems as we head to the weekend.

virginia's capital city is dealing with a lot of rain. yvette joins us from richmond. >> reporter: it's been a messy day today. full of heavy rain and a lot of sleet in the metro richmond area vdot crews have been working around the clock all week and spraying the roads with a salt and sand mixture trying to plow that mess away. the problem is, the heavy rain is washing away this sand mixture. more quickly resulting in dangerous driving conditions. reply say since friday there have been two storm-related deaths so far and plenty more accidents. there are cars here stuck on sides of the roads and ditches. schools remainlosed today, as well as many businesses in the area. one industry that is booming with a lot of work right now is the towing companies. they are benefitting from all of this. here live, the snow is falling. you can feel the wind out here. people are taking it very slow on the roadways. you can't imagine anybody wanting to get out tonight. back to you. >> all right. thanks. >>> richmond has had its share of winter weather dow

virginia's role, as i tell my students, virginia played a crucial role in the revolution. a lot of folks that are knowledgeable of the revolution understand the role of people like washington and jefferson and such. but they -- militarily speaking, virginia's role was gigantic, huge, even though if you look for battle fields and you look for military events. expect what happens at the end. nevertheless, it served everywhere from canada all the way down to georgia on battle fields throughout the. they play a crucial role in the war. and of course in the revolution and this is something in my research for other books, i've been kind of learning for about. the revolution wasn't just the war from 1785 to '81. virginia played an important role in the opposition to british policies that led to combat. we play add leading role, politically speaking and of course militarily speaking. my folks were trying to create a new unit. we were trying to get the right question. i was doing the question on the color of the hunting shirts. i came across the letters and diary of a captain. ther
