we're anxious to share west virginia with everybody. we maintain west virginia's status as an energy powerhouse. the mountain valley pipeline is flowing. berkshire hathaway has brought new facilities to west virginia and thousands of new clean energy jobs. success in west virginia is part of a larger american story of energy innovation and nndz. we've always been a powerhouse in energy. now we have wind and solar and battery storage. in 2023, america produced more energy than ever. i want you to hear this. in 2023 we lead the world in energy production. 38 trillion -- 38 thousand cubic feet of natural gas produced, 4.7 trillion barrels of crude oil. 238 million megawatt-hours of solar, and a record 6.4 gigawatts of new batteries installed on the grid. nowhere in the world has that happened but here because of all of us. you can't eliminate your way to a cleaner environment. you can't eliminate, quit using something. you've got to innovate through technology. that's why we funded the regional hydrogen hubs and made sure one of them would

i'll say the state of virginia. but the chesapeake region generally and this is what i was referencing earlier, that this area that produced a great many leaders in the midst of the revolution. some of those leaders were engaged in debates over commerce. how do you arbitrate trade? trade? how are we going? how is virginia and maryland going to decide how we work out commerce on the potomac? if you've ever been to mount vernon, for example, george washington's ancestral home, if you stand out there and look at that beautiful scene of the potomac, you almost imagine people on both sides of it thinking by way of states, how are we going to regulate this? who has right of way, who has access? is one state going to tax another's commerce? all these kinds of questions come to the fore. and that's in part what a number of these folks are dealing with. and virginia and maryland of their own accord. now, might you know, we would be used to a national government handling those kinds of questions well, these are two states who

james madison, of course, of virginia is there. i'm it would have been very hard to have imagined the philadelphia convention ultimately in terms of its ability to kind of secure some level of support without george washington's support. washington being someone that was widely he was the american sense that he was someone who had laid down power when he had the opportunity to take it up. so if you were worried this turning into, you know, a power play, power grab, something sort of anti populist in that sense, then presumably washington's presence his support from it would give you some comfort, right? some of pause that in fact, that isn't what it was all about. so there are some attendees there. alexander hamilton, of course, as i said, he wasn't able to stay the of the time, but nonetheless, is there. not to mention him as kind of the. sort of leading among a group of sort new nationalists, if you put yourself into that meeting in philadelphia, if you were there in independence hall or pennsylvania state house, you say washingt

the army of virginia. and i also want to just touch on little bit about how the attitudes of enslaved people affect the attitudes of soldiers as well. and especially how those attitudes collectively within the army especially affected the evolving process of emancipation as it related to the american civil war. now, the three corps that made up the army of virginia, katie them eventually commanded by franz sigel, nathaniel banks and mcdowell, the men in those command were all volunteers, and they virtually all marched into virginia with a near universal commitment to restoring the union. but they had very varied views on almost everything else associated with the civil war. almost all were racist, often, profoundly. the more i with the army of the potomac, and the more history them as an agent of emancipation, the more. i also realized how deeply racism was among the people of that army and this nation, the many of them, some of them were just disgustingly so, hardly less sympathetic to enslaved people tha

the virginia assembly had voted against secession.t was going to remain a loyal state to the united states. but after lincoln called up those 75,000 troops, that really allowed the hotheads in virginia to say, wow, we are going to be attacked by these 75,000 yankees. we had better turn to president davis and see if he would defend us from these yankees, and that is what they did. they announced secession and without asking davis, they seceded and said it was outrageous that the president of the united states was calling up this huge army and basically that they would be trampled upon . so they seceded and what is interesting to me as an historian is that jefferson davis did not actually i don't think want them to secede. he would have preferred virginia to remain rather like kentucky, a kind of neutral middle. after all, they were called middle states, border states. so from davis plus point of view in terms of his strategy, it was easier to imagine defending this vast expanse of southern states of the deep south, which very difficult

there's an organization in virginia called the virginia health care foundation. what they do is they help low-income people and seniors apply for medicaid, apply for affordable care act subsidies. they have a contract with cms to help them hire eight navigators who work around the state who help low-income people access programs to which they are entitled, for which they have paid taxes. they received a note suggesting that that grant to hire these navigators to hire these people was going to expire and they couldn't get any federal funding after 5 o'clock today. they heard this late yesterday, so they did what any good organization would do. they reached out this mrning -- morning to cms, please give us the payment before 5 o'clock today and what they got back was, sorry, our website is down. we decided that today is the day that we will repair our website and it will be open again soon. open again soon, but after the 5 o'clock deadline. you don't have to be a genius to figure this out. hurting people getting health insurance, hurting child care centers, hurting
