series of low ridges before turning south at cumberland, marks the upboundary between virginia and maryland. washington favored the virginia side where he owned tracts that he leased to farmers. trotting at his horse at five miles per day, he reached cumberland on the tenth day. open for settlement prior to the revolution, the potomac valley below cumberland had become a part of the eastern states by 1784. many settlers had cast their lot with the patriot cause in 1776 and now gave washington a hero's welcome. his tenants, strained by a decade of war and recession, paid what they could toward their long past due rents and cheered him on his way. to this point, the trip went well. the troubles began after he left the settled lands east of the allegheny and began ascending into southwestern pennsylvania. as a colonial militia officer serving under edward braddock during the french and indian wars, washington had helped cut a pathway through the wilderness to supply and support a massive british assault on french positions in the ohio valley and had retreated in terror across it after braddock's crushing

farther to the north, western howard into frederick, washington county panhandle of west virginia couldo 3 inches. some of the high spots might get as much as 3 to 4 inches. and then it's gone. temperatures are below freezing. just a few scattered flurries north and west of us. we're showing our cloudy sky there now live view from storm team 4 city camera. temperatures will be in the upper 20s by 8:00 a.m.. low 30s as the snow and rain moves in around noontime. mid-30s by late afternoon. so a lot of it will be slushy on the roads and much of the accumulation will be on grassy areas. and then patchy ice tomorrow morning with temperatures in the 20s. 40s tomorrow afternoon and partly cloudy. could get another round of snow friday night into saturday. may mix with some rain as well, saturday. sun back sunday. another chance of snow on monday. so we'll have a busy pattern over the next few days. i'm back in ten minutes at 5:31 with a look at the winter weather advisory zones. >>> right now roads looking pretty good. could be wet and slushy as you mentioned for your trip home. 95 north bound

this is west virginia, not washington. and we work together to meet the challenges we face as a state. through the years, i'm proud of the great progress we have made together. we have improved our business climate. watched meaningful reforms to our education system, addressed our long time liabilities and cut taxes for working families and small businesses. just two weeks ago, we eliminate eliminated our state's business franchise tax. not only encouraging employers to continue to invest in our state, but eliminating extra paper work that made it more difficult to do business here. eliminating the business franchise tax is just wup of the recent steps we have taken to responsible responsibly reduce taxes. these continue to -- in west virginia jobs. but as i speak to the newest e members of this legislature and i know that we've got more than a few of those, several of you up there. i'm sure that you're aware this is not the only or the last hurdle we face to improve our state's business climd. nearly four decades ago, our

this morning the worst weather that we're seeing virginia north carolina up through washington, d.c. it's just a coating of either snow, sleet or freezing rain. a lot of schools are already delayed throughout these regions, but definitely be careful here especially through the delmarva region anywhere near the chesapeake is where we're seeing the worst. how about temperatures in northern new england? one of the coldest mornings of the winter. negative 18 in glens falls right now, negative numbers all through northern new england. we're in the single digits as far south as hartford and it's still cold. little rock. it's chilly in the northern plains, but we're heading in the right direction. it's much warmer today than yesterday morning. this afternoon, denver looks great. look at montana at 41. this is the warm air that will sweep across the country. and as i mentioned, there's a chance tomorrow, at least, for areas like minneapolis and chicago for the first time in two weeks to be near freezing. >> that's a good sign. >> yeah just to have a little bit of that ice melt just a little
