behind the headlines, author joan walsh explains, what's the matter with white people? hello. i'm bonnie erbe. welcome to "to the contrary", a discussion of news and social trends from diverse perspectives. up first, wooing women. one more presidential debate remains for gop presidential hopeful mitt romney and president obama to make their case to the highly touted women's vote. this week after the so-called "town-brawl" debate dueling ads appeared focusing directly on the women's vote. >> turns out, rick perry doesn't oppose contraception at all. >> couldn't we find women that are qualified. a gallup/usa today survey in 12 crucial swing states finds women list abortion as the most important issue 39% for women, followed by jobs 19%, healthcare 18% and the economy 16%. in contrast, men see jobs 38% and the economy 37% as the two most important issues facing men. romney is now within one point of obama among female likely voters in swing states 48%-49%. >> mostly with this poll out that shows women this swing states and women voters rank abortion and rights can romney maintain

joe walsh. what stands out right away for you? first let's look at the numbers this is a race being watched all over the country what we found is that it's duckworth, 50 percent, walsh 40 percent. nine percent are undecided which seems like a fairly large figure so close to election day but when you go deeper into the numbers it's very simple why she has this lead, it's the women's vote among men is 46-45 walsh but when you look at the women's vote it is 54, 34 duckworth 20 percentage points. everybody is talking about women's issues. plus you have these recent flaps with wash talking about saying a abortion was and never medically or technologically necessary to save a woman's life. duckworth is running against walsh and points out the issue of child support that was resolved. nine percent of women here are undecided which is quite a large chunk. when we look into these numbers there are really hurdles here for walsh to try to earn a second term you've got the fact that independent voters were 35 percent of the district voters, 4
