nick paton walsh is in the area of taksim square.rounds of tear gas into the crowds. what else are you seeing from your vantage point? >> reporter: i'm talking through a gas mask. tear gas is being blown into our live position. we've seen a group of police who have moved toward some of the side alleys. there have been a number of protesters edging towards them and their position using corrugated iron as shields, moving towards them potentially to throw something. this is the first time the police have edged down this direction. it seems down one of the side alleys adjacent to our bureau. to the left of where i'm standing, an enormous amount of tear gas. an excavation path. and i believe there were protesters rallying on the other side of the balcony adjacent of that particular excavator. this is seeing some sort of lull but it may be a regrouping of sorts. we haven't seen the massive protesters that have normally been below this bureau returning since the last volley of tear gas. to the left there are some small group of people headi

nick paton walsh is in the middle of it all.ppening, nick. >> reporter: well, behind me we see this continued standoff between police and protesters down there. they've made now two barricades that are reasonably constructed. they've been throwing rocks at the police and the police respond with substantial amounts of tear gas to clear them away. this continues, frankly, for minutes and hours, another crack there, as well, but we're now into eight hours of this activity. sometimes we hear a stun grenade go off, too. police now into the eighth hour of trying to control the protesters around the square. sometimes tear gas billows out and obscures our view of much of what is happening, but it's a strange scene, because while there are these clashes happening down side streets and tires on fire, we're also seeing sometimes people what seem to be going about their ordinary business, taxis simply driving through. the central greenery here, the park, the protests began across the country, that seems to be left alone. the istanbul govern

the seth walsh case in tehachipe is an example of that. so those are the tools we have. we have a lot of discussion, senator franken and others have introduced bills in the united states senate to address precisely the questions that you are asking, governor, and we have supported them and we continue to look forward -- as a prosecutor i always want more tools. you know, i see a problem out there and i want to have the tools to fix it. we passed a hate crimes law in 2009 that enables us to work with local law enforcement in much more effective ways to combat hate crimes including but not limited to lgbt motivated violence. so we'd love to have more tools. but, you know, with the tools that we currently have, we're doing as much as we can and i think ruslyn's point about the uptick in the number of complaints we're both receiving, i'm not sure that necessarily reflects, as ruslyn correctly pointed out, that there's an uptick in violence. the doctrine of futility often resulted in less complaints being seen. i think there's a commitment in the federal level to doing our le

nick paton walsh is live in istanbul. what can you tell us about the tone and tenor of the events behind you right now? >> reporter: well there has been a somewhat dramatic development. so far what we've seen today appeared to be a police strategy to take control of the area around central gesi park, an encamped area with lots of people living there in tents for weeks. we saw riot police inside the tree line moving into the heavily encamped area, that will be a significant concern of the hundreds of people inside there. we did see tear gas go inside that camp briefly as well. there are many people in there, densely populated, tent in there, many will be deeply worried about the police moving in. they appear to have withdrawn slightly. it's hard to see from our vantage point what is happening inside there but the real fear of course would be the impact on protesters if police moved in there, where would they run to. it contradicts what we've been hearing from the government of phe said we've been having more altercations b

arwa damon and nick paton walsh live. arwa damon, let me start with you. dramatic footage in the last couple hours of you coming under attack and protesters from the tear gas from police. describe what was going on there. >> reporter: well, we were down in gezi park and remember, the government said it would not enter the park itself and while we did not see the riot police going in and most certainly came under incredibly intense fire with the tear gas water cannons at one point, too, it's fairly densely populated so when that happens there is complete chaos. some people fairly used to this, trying to calm others down. there are people running around. they will pour this white lick kid, it's actually mixed with water into each other's eyes to ease the sting but this went on four hours. people were incredibly angry, frustrated and saying that the government was effectively lying to them because even though they didn't physically enter the park, they most certainly were firing tear gas directly into it. we ended up having to run from one side of the park, c
