our senior correspondent nick paton walsh has the latest for us. nick, what is the latest there?er: as you said, over 400 injured. the lebanese red cross said that. the government came out and stamping their authorities bringing an end to the clashes between the police and frpropetr protesters. there is a sense of clean up and almost getting back to normal. there was a debate if they should call people back out in the streets. at the same time, 6:00 today. they called that protest off. there is social media backlash. the trash is just the tip of the iceberg. it is the dysfunction of government here and years of corruption and parliament unable to decide who they want to be president. and deciding to renew their own term because they could not pass election laws. a new sense of dysfunction in the elite and that is like electricity, water and trash collection. it became too much. they were met by a tough response. that marked a large number of people on the streets. a small minority clashed with protests which clashed with police. that is what we saw last night. now the arm y are o

let's get to our correspondent nick paton walsh who is not far from where the f-16s are taking off. >porter: christine, it has been active here. we have seen two f-16s taking off and landing here on the airstrip behind us. it is hard to tell if they are u.s. or turkish planes. the key thing about this base is it is a mere 15 minutes flight from here to syria. that massively reduces the amount of time that pilots have to spend in the air. the amount of fuel they have to use up before they get to the target area to continue hitting either long-term targets or short-term. that is why they got into the negotiations with turkey. we hear the strikes began and they were hitting long sought after targets in syria. a significant development for the u.s. in the campaign. there will be more jets coming out of here and there are already drones out of the area. you have more time and more pilots in the area and over the area they are trying to target which raises the opportunity to hit isis as they try to move around. christine. >> nick, thank you for that. >>> the head of the epa calling the toxi
