army medical center to what's now known as the walter reed national medical center at bethesda. pretty challenging the cultures that exist there, you have cultures that exist here, you are speaking about cultural differences between the military and its hierarchy of command and control and the civilian command and control and figuring out the two greatest things you need in the chaos of disaster. no. 1, communications. no. 2 who's in charge. i dealt with a issues when i was combining the army and the navy medical forces between walter reed and bethesda. america's army is an amazingly heroic army. they have occupied valley forge , tokyo, berlin, danang and now it occupies bethesda, maryland, but we're working through that. how do we break those cultural barriers, how do we figure out supporting supporters, how do we do that before the next capacity goes on? so what have we done, what capabilities do we bring, where do we use them and how will they be playing a role here in the event of the most likely nightmare scenarios for this area? i grew up in the bay area, i have tremendous

home from combat the same person who went over there, and it's not just the tragedies we see in walter reed, the family owe who is lost their legs or their arms and their eyesight, it is people who are coming home with ptsd or traumatic brain injury, tens and tens and tens of thousands of people, so we've got to work on some new efforts to figure out ways that we treat those people as effectively as we can. >> does the v.a. need to do more outreach to reach some of these veterans? >> that's a very good point. we have held three hearings, the first one dealt with the backlog. the second one dealt with healthcare in general. and the third one dealt with outreach. because i think the v.a. healthcare system is a strong system, but it doesn't mean anything to you if you don't know how to enroll in the system. and i think historically the v.a. bureaucracy has not done a good job in outreach, telling you, ok, you served, this is what you are entitled to. this is your system. you're a taxpayer. you're a veteran. we want you in the system. not everybody, in fact, will want to come to the v.a. health

obviously, the people who are hospitalized in places like walter reed bethesda our series of winter. they have not been taken back home to a nearby hospital. pictures would pick their missing limbs. to have significant this figuration. if they are burn injuries they're generally down that brooks. they're not there. and i was struck by them i was struck in talking to them, and i've always asked them what happened to them and they tell me what happened to them, how this occurred. and i'm always struck by them saying i want to get back to my you know, and my initial sense of that was that these guys are so caught up in what was said about the purposes of the war in iraq or afghanistan that they want to go over and carry the flag again. but it's far more basic than that. they want to be with her unit. they want to be with her friends. they want to be with her buddies. when they hear about a fund that is killed, i heard a young marine whom i've known a number of years who shot at falluja, multiple bullet wounds and his heart smote he said came about lunch, when he learned one of the guys

my husband bob deal was hospitalized in the walter reed medical center for 11 months several years ago and i had an opportunity to visit the wounded warriors and care givers that were with them. i heard the store tors and i couldn't believe what was care is literally providing for a feeding, bathing, dressing in the home setting. they are trying to navigate across many different health care systems. as you say, the soldiers today are coming back with multiple wounds. many who would have died in former wars are surviving. but a lot of them have very difficult problems which require diverse medical systems. so the care-giver is trying to coordinate across those systems. they're looking after the emotional needs, trying to keep their emotional balance for their loved one. they're looking after financial issues. many of them, it's really 24/7 duty because they may be the only person who is available, who is trusted and who is knowledgeable night and day. >> it's truly, i think, overwhelming that so many times we aren't realizing what the families are going through. andrea, i know that your
