raphael warnock joins me now author of a new book called a way out of no way. thank you very much. nice to hear that every sunday morning in church growing up. i should get there more often than i do now. thank you for joining us. i appreciate it. democrats can't afford to lose a single seat in the senate. you were able to flip yours from red to blue but now republicans are hoping they could take it back. you obviously think you are a better place for georgians than your opponent but do you think he is qualified to serve in the senate if he does win? >> great to be with you, don. the great thing about a democracy is it is not up to either one of us but up to the people of georgia and i can tell you that the people of georgia have a real choice in front of them about who is ready to represent them in the united states senate. i'm proud of my record. i'm proud of the work that i've done to support ordinary, hard working families. we passed the single largest tax cut for middle and working class families in american history called the expanded child tax credit. we passed a bipartisan

i think the struggle that senator warnock talks about is particularly heightened in georgia.attempts to delegitimized voters in atlanta, in fulton county, where the overwhelming african american preponderance of voters were in georgia, and that election. and that goes back to the exact reasons why black people were given the vote at the end of the civil war in the first place. >> what rationale, eddie, is given, when these restrictive voting laws are put in place, in the last five years or so? publicly, why do they say they are doing it? >> it's a feature of the stop the steal claim around election fraud. the idea that our election process has been compromised by forces who aim to steal power. it's freudian projection in so many ways. and it's also an echo of the past, where we saw the disenfranchisement of black men -- remember black women didn't get the vote with the 15th amendment. but when we saw the disenfranchisement of black man at the collapse of radical reconstruction, some of the same margins were being made. some of the same arguments were being made. we need to un

herschel walker is now trailing raphael warnock in georgia by single digits but it is getting bigger. mike lee is in trouble in utah pause there is a young, uh, independent out there who is moderate and he was endorsed by the democrats but he is not a democrat. um, j.d. vance is behind tim ryan in ohio. so now, this is not all -- and this is in spite of the fact that -- that the democrats are running are ten points ahead of biden in terms of favorability. usually, had you what you see in the midterms is the president is unpopular drags the congress dune. not happening. there is two explanations. most people today todd believe the supreme court is a rogue organization. that is a fact. there are approval ratings down around 33% and after today, it is going be worse. and if they start screwing around with the elections as they said they were going to do next year, they are going to be in the same boat as trump in terms of their respectability. so you have got that and then you got all this stuff about trump ask whether he is a crook. but it doesn't -- i mean, it almost doesn't matter whe

outside the gas station volunteers held signs declaring warnock isn't working., gas prices are through the roof and it's somehow warp yok's fault. now here, take this money. a spokesman for walker didn't know about the event before this happening despite the fact that the voucher giveaway was crediting wark for the idea. >> herschel walker decided, you know what, we're going to do the free gas community. i want you to know that i'm care, coming with gas vouchers for everyone. >> with me now is jason johnson host of the slate podcast. you know that. you saw the little click. last time i heard it would be illegal to hand out water in the state of georgia, you know, when it comes to elections, offer food or water waiting in line you risk misdemeanor charges and there's a story in "the atlanta journal constitution" about a state representative who send an investigator to an atlanta precinct in 2020 with a firearm on hip and demanded all food and water be removed and yet herschel walker can hand out gas cards. what's happening? >> you know, yeah. capri suns when you

it's called cruise warnock amendment. ted cruz, that is. mm-hmm ted cruz and i disagree on many many things to be sure but he and i both on the commerce committee. of the senate and as it turns out he had something that he wanted to get done that i also wanted to get done. and the night we passed a bipartisan infrastructure bill. we had to do it as an amendment couldn't do it in committee. and he stood up and made his argument for why he thought this should happen. and then i stood up and made my argument and i heard myself say words that i'd never thought i'd hear myself say something along the order of i agree with the senator from texas. yeah, and the chamber burst out and laughter all of our colleagues and they passed it overwhelmingly sure and twitter began to fire up and folks on my side and i suspect on his side. you're my staff was showing me what was going on on twitter. folks were asking well. what is this? what is this cruise warnock commitment? how could you stand with him? it's very very simple. i-14 interstate he wants to see

to a major degree in the campaign with a lot of the same attacks against barack obama and against warnock in the debate that he had no fewer than a dozen times did she call him a radical liberal and you better believe that will be the tagline this time around because it plays into the fears of republicans that the nation is slipping down that path and certainly a progressive track record of course. if you look at his biggest issue last year what he most identified with was federal voting rights expansion. the act got held up in gridlock but this year of course he hasn't abandoned support for that at all. this year you're not seeing him emphasize that nearly as much as others. the federal gas tax breaks and fuel, capping the price of insulin. all those things is the message he is pounding every day and meant to show you can work across party lines and raise some of these were consensus driven nonpartisan issues. >> were the victories surprising still or were they expected after given how democrats turned out? >> the biggest challenge for all of the candidates they all calculated very early
