throughout process of putting together this workshop we realize we have a lot of things we share in common. one is a belief with more than one person a whole community can come together and build strength and power and make changes. that's the emphasis of everything we are doing today is trying to network and share ideas and build ourselves into a more positive future. that's why we are here. i'm very glad to see you all have come to our session in the morning. i hope that through this workshop you will get the answers you have in terms of how to take that next step in terms of organizing your own neighborhoodses and learn from those who come before you to forge a way to improving the city which is something we all hold very dear. i wanted to say in terms of the to m format we are flexible. there is a general introduction as to who we are and who we serve and our experiences and the tools and strategies we identified to be successful. then we will open it up for you all to decide where you want it to go. we have question cards in the back i hope all of you grabbed. through the question car

we had a chance to walk throught how we managed this, and we will have a window and activation time. we didn't have a lot of activity. the eoc stood up. it was a good activation drill. it was a good lesson on how to put this together. the world series, we didn't have a lot of time to plan for. we anticipated it and took it forward in a number of ways. you have to know the exact expectations. we had a couple of days to put this together. we had something like 36 hours to come up with a plan for the celebration. to put it together that quickly, not a lot of time. in games one and two, the celebration went well. as i look through the data, we had some strengths and areas we are improving on. using the california assistance team, this was beneficial particularly for the celebration with the clinic, they were able to handle much of this. there were over 100 people who were treated inside the civic center, and there were a lot of people there. most of them were very minor. there were a number of people transported to the hospital. there was nothing particularly serious. we took them from t

we had a couple of key successes we wanted to highlight. the first is we have been working very hard collectively as a staff to reduce our overtime expenditures. and i think this slide demonstrates we've been very successful in doing that. over the last two years, alone, we've saved $430,000 in overtime expenditures. and between fiscal year 2005-2006 and the current fiscal year, we've saved over $1 million. we're also working very hard to reduce our workers comp costs. and really fantastically in the first six months of this fiscal year, the department has saved $247,000 on our workers comp claims versus the same period last year. and we're working very hard to change the culture in the department and improve safety in the department. we are maximizing transitional work so that people who are available to come back to work can do so. we have a place to put them. that both reduces our costs and it increases people's productivity. we've created a staff safety advisory committee. as well as a bimonthly safety newsletter. in terms of ideas that

we always get what we want when we needed. we set a schedule and everybody keeps to that schedule. we have never had any disagreements with the staff. everything is presented on time. it makes for a relatively smooth process, but this is a large district and take a long time to get anything done. we are very appreciative to be able to do that. if you have a copy of the audit report, it is a big report and i don't want to go through every number, but these are basically the financial statements. we give opinions on various aspects of the system. we express an opinion as to whether or not they are fairly presented. it is an unqualified opinion, which means we believe everything to be fairly stated. we also issue opinions on compliance with federal and state programs. those opinions that you will find in the back of the book are somewhat the subject to some of the findings that we have. it is important that we go over some of those findings and give you an understanding of what those findings mean and why they are in there. again, from a financial statement standpoint, we had no finan

and we got an nc-17. and we said, "okay"-- at the time, we were like, "okay, what do we need to do? what do we need to cut?" and just for the people who are watching this, that means, like, no one can see it. basically, it means your movie's dead. well, that's what it means: nobody under 17 allowed-- with a parent or not, no one allowed. what it really means is, no multiplex will carry your movie. there's very few, just independent theaters. it's just so wrong. i mean, just the nc-17 is a ridiculous notion that i, as a parent of my child, if i want to take him to saving private ryan and it's nc-17, someone-- some organization can tell me i can't. you know, that's my kid, you know? and i should be able-- if i want to take him to a movie, i can take him to a movie. i let my kids see some of that stuff, and some of the drek that's rated g and pg. but the m.p.a. is the scary-- i mean, we could go on forever, because that's even scarier than, you know, a sandwich company sort of deciding what's on a show, (ken) i think you actually have a shot to negotiate with them. well, you do, only i
