there is a powell memorial off to my side, a memorial to john wesley powell. he was the first river explorer here, back in 1869. and he was a passionate geologist. he just wanted to come out and explore the canyon's geology. and put together a do-it-yourself trip. and he was a teacher at illinois wesleyan university and didn't get much support from the federal government. most explorations of the west were federally sponsored because they had national import, hopefully they would bring back new territories or economic resources or new transportation routes. and the nation wasn't convinced the grand canyon was worth all that much, so powell got almost no support for his expeditions, so he put it together on his own. he had nine other crew members to start out with, and some got disgruntled along the way and left. there was a controversy about that, because there is a plaque on the memorial and three names were left off, they did almost all of the trip but at the end of the trip they decided they had enough so they walked off to the mormon villages in utah and w
