today, we are in the west virginia state capital. it's in charleston, west virginia.to the south bank of the canal river, located in canal county, which is a centralized location in west virginia. with virginia became a state on june 20, 18 63. the first capital was located in wheeling, west virginia, in the panhandle. it was far enough away from the fighting during the civil war. and it was also the location of where the conventions were held when we were deciding to become our own state. the capital was moved to charlston for its more convenient location. wheeling is very out-of-the-way, in a very mountainous state, made it very hard to travel up to that part of the area. if you walked around capital grants today, you would notice the most iconic statue we have is the lincoln walks at midnight. it is modeled after the poem. abraham lincoln was the president that proclaimed this as the 35th state. the outside of the dome is done in a zinc and copper alloy. it also has a lead lining to it. on top of that is a goldleaf. likeeaves are done to look various flora from wes

virginia was divided east and west. many of the issues between these two sections were a microcosm of the larger issues that was facing the country. one of the biggest issues facing virginia were the allegheny mountains separating virginia essentially in half. these mountains were a natural barrier for transportation and communication. they affected trade, the farmers and this burgeoning industry that you have in western virginia. they found it much easier to get their goods to market on the ohio river and take them west to ohio or up to pittsburgh in western pennsylvania. as much, western virginia felt much more closely aligned to the north and west than it did to tide water, virginia. as an example, i'm from wheeling, which is up here in the northern panhandle. we're about 50 miles south of pittsburgh and more than 300 miles away from richmond. another issue facing the two sections was slavery. the census counted nearly 1.6 million people living in the state. and of that number, nearly 500,000 were slaves. that's abou

as part of our our planet matters series,, we travelled across west antarctica to reach the front ofglesia. —— one mac. until this year, only four people had ever been here, the front of what they call the doomsday glacier. but understanding what is happening here is crucial for us all. if we are thinking about what sea level will be like in ten years, this glacier is the place to be and this is the location to ask these questions at. the chaos of broken ice at front is almost 100 miles wide and it is collapsing into the sea at two miles a year to it sits at the heart of the vast reason of ice in west antarctica, the glacier is the size of britain and contains more than half metre of sea level rise. and if thwaites goes, most of the west antarctic ice sheet will as well and there is three metres smaller up in that. it is enough to swamp many of the great cities of the world and drive hundreds of millions of people from their homes. getting here is not easy. it takes five weeks just to get the science teams and their equipment to the front of the glacier. this is an historic moment. t
