much of that is happening in western massachusetts. sachusetts they are watching the rivers side. here, again, there's still a lot of activity. perhaps you can see behind that tugboat, a couple of guys, earlier this were lifting some boats out of the water, making sure all this rigging is secure. every time i look around i think of the movie "perfect storm." these are hearty boats. if you look at these two boats, the mirage and miss leslie, that's what so many of these commercial fishing boats look like. look at that rigging. they're strong. they can take it. the people in this part of country are used to these storms. they know how to deal with them. the problem is the leisure boats which are way across the harbor. again, things are calming down. but i really don't want to say that, because every time i say it i feel a gust of wind come up or something. this event is not over. it's not going to be a hurricane certainly but certainly not over either. >> is certainly not over. i understand, ron, you had a chance to talk with one of the b

if you were to draw a line from the middle of vermont down through western massachusetts into connecticutlong island sound, that's where the connecticut river runs. this is flowing down it right now. it's going at a pretty good clip. secondly it's full of junk. we have seen all kind of stuff flowing downstream. this stuff coming from those flash floods that hit vermont and parts of massachusetts. they washed out roads to several small communities. we are told the good news is the water is going down in those areas. it's now flown into big rivers like this, like the connecticut river. and that's where the communities downstream are bracing for the possibility of flooding. but so part waters stayed below flood stage and the people had a chance to repair. that's the big difference. you talk to people downstream and we'll tell you why a few of them have evacuated. at least they had a chance to evacuate. which is different than what we saw with the flash flooding to our north. we have been told somewhere in the neighborhood of 263 roads and bridges have been damaged or destroyed from the storm

while this area got battered by wind and high surf, areas inland like western massachusetts and vermonticut got drenched with rain, significant flooding, mudslides in some places. problems that continue. as the sun comes up here this morning, the idea is to get some of the roadways cleared of downed branches and trees and try to get the power back on. we're told at least in this area at the earliest, it will be midday before there's any power restored. other parts of the northeast and other parts of new england, it may be several days before power is back on. that will be a hit in the pocketbook, not just to recover from the cleanup and some of the damage that was done but also the weekends that we're still left in the summertime with people coming here as tourists. a lot of restaurants saying they lost all of their food because the power is out. they won't be able to serve anybody. back to you guys. >> all right. adam housley live in newport, rhode island where they're waiting for the electric guy to turn on the lights. >> that father had that son high up in the air. >> thank goodness

and flooding going on all the way from burlington, vermont, back into pars of stall massachusetts, including western new jersey, scranton, binghamton, and all the way back up here. that entire area of flooding going on. even though the rain has stopped in some spots the water is still running off. take you to one more spot here because we just had blue hill, massachusetts, report in with a 74-mile-per-hour gust. and milton, mass. just had an 81-mile-per-hour gust. trees are falling left and right with wind like that. here's what's going on here. we hadn't had that much wind across parts of new york and vermont now because we're on this side of the eye, but this is the bad side of the eye. plus too there's no friction many the ocean so the wind gets to come right off the ocean and plow right into new hampshire, maine, and boston. in boston, don't be walking around. let the weather settle down a little bit. let that wind die off because trees are falling left and right. we've had a very wet august and the tree roots are completely saturated and they're going as fast as i can find them on the reports h
