and it's helping bring lake- effect snow to parts of western new york near buffalo, already hit with ree feet of snow late last week. as if the government didn't have enough money troubles, now there's a problem with the new $100 billion bill. the government was forced to stop production because some of the bills creased during printing, leaving a blank line on the face. now officials face the daunting task of sorting through more than a billion bills to determine which of them is flawed. in the meantime, the treasury will resume production of the old-style benjamins. snow amounts, in the syracuse area, another one to two feet, back through western new york, western pennsylvania, about five to six inches to eight inches of snow and the cold air, we're talking about bitterly cold temperatures, you can see the jet stream dips way to the south. these are departures from normal. actual temperatures right now, you can see it is bitterly cold, 29 in orlando, the good news is in plant city where they have got all those citrus and strawberry crops, temperatures a little bit warmer, 12 in buffalo right now, windchills make it feel well below zero around much of the great lakes. single digits in atlanta. we're not going to see any moderation until tuesday. upper 40s to low 50s down into florida. and then the jet stream takes a little bit of a moderate jog to the north. that keeps the cold air banked up around the great lakes and then temperatures moderate down through the southeast. but again here in the great lakes, the windchill, the winds, and the snow a big, big factor, matt? >> i'll take it, al, thank you very much. we'll get the rest of al's forecast in just a bi

as you mentioned, we got pummeled in some parts of western new york. not the typical areas that get pummeled. with lake-effect snow. they were areas closer to the city. south buffalo, picking up as much as 30 to 40 inches of snowfall. cheektowaga, depew, those areas picking up three to four feet of snow. those are more populated areas. a lot of time lake-effect snowstorms affect the southern tier areas, south of buffalo. less populated. less roadways. and the problems on the throughway yesterday, which actually started wednesday night. these people sitting out there for hours and hours, in their cars. we got a lot of folks that were out there, helping these people out. bringing them food. bringing them supplies. now as you mentioned, the the throughway is back open again. >> it's good news, mike. and good news continue there's there's less lake-effect snow expected there in that area this morning. and as we said, the roads are open. we said it a couple times now. here's the wind direction. it shifts ever-so-slightly. so, the wind spends less time dragg

because in one area of western new york, it was clear, and just a dusting of snow, then you would drivef snow, and that's where the accidents happened and occurred. but the good news is here that everyone is safe. there was no injuries, and the throughway is now open. back to you. >> yeah, and you're saying they're being questioned about why it was closed and what their procedures are like. they're used to, you know, far larger lake-effect snow events than this one. do we know why they had to shut down for this one? >> reporter: well, you know, there was rain the day before. so it downpoured, and then it turned into ice, then it snowed. i think it caused a lot of accidents, and that's what caused most of the problems. sometimes when it just snows, it's not as slippery, but there were so many accidents, they couldn't keep up with the accidents and the snow coming down, so they had to shut down the throughway. again, they're looking at that process. >> wkbw for us this morning, thank you so much. >>> president obama's deficit commission is expected to vote on its plan today, one that coul

snow has backed off, but, again, more lake effect from here to western pennsylvania and western and central new york today, tonight and even into tomorrow around the syracuse area. chris? >> thank you, mike. >>> well, the effects of the cold may last long after the sun has warmed south florida because growers there are really worried about what it's going to do to their citrus crops and their strawberry crops. weather channel meteorologist paul goodloe is following that story from plant city. paul? >> we're not subzero, but we have been subzero. the farmer that planted this field with strawberries and temperatures still not above freezing. that's why the sprinklers are still going. he is coating his fruit, his crop, his blossoms in ice to protect the fruit. now, after the ice forms or the water, it keeps that fruit at 32 degrees and energy is released to form the ice and that's why the sprinklers are still going on. we dropped down to 26 degrees here in this field and that is considered a hard freeze and the concern now is to protect the fruit, not only the strawberries, but also the citrus crop. th

western minnesota. >> midnight, the ball drop in new york city? >> quiet on the east coast. for a change. unlike last week. 40 degrees, partly cloudy skies. >> sparing new york this time. lee goldberg, wabc-tv, lee, thank you. >>> and there was also this today, word of an earthquake in indiana. look at these images from inside a convenience store. the shopping carts there shaking. it was only a 3.8 earthquake, but look at how far and wide it was felt. centered north of indianapolis, the ground shook all the way from new jersey to wisconsin. it's just the third quake reported along this particular fault line in 200 years. no one was hurt. >>> another scare tonight for airline passengers after an engine problem on a delta flight led to an emergency landing. 225 passengers were on board the boeing 757, headed from detroit to phoenix. it made an emergency landing in colorado springs, because of that troubled engine. then, there was a fire in the main landing gear. two passengers were hurt while they slid down those emergency chutes. >>> and for those of you traveling by car, a bold prediction

we have lake-effect snows back into new york and ohio and even into western pennsylvania at this time. so we are looking for another storm to move in here. this is going to be a coastal low trying 20 work its-- trying to work its way in here saturday night into sunday. it depends on the track of the low. if it stays off along the coast, we could miss it. or more to the eastern counties. but if it stays more inland, everywhere could see snow going into saturday night and sunday. we will keep our eye on that for you. as for today, that temperature will be coming in around 33 degrees. my big concern is we will have icy spots going throughout the day especially this morning. we will be seeing plenty of sunshine. we had the snow yesterday. the snow is out of here. it is replaced by the sun shine. but it will remain cold. and going through tonight, we will be cold once again so you need to bundle up. we will be seeing partly cloudy skies and the cold temperatures you know what, they are going to stick around heading into tomorrow. check out tomorrow. we will be seeing partly cloudy skies. t
