this week the governor of michigan, gretchen whitmer, asked the white house to help meet the surge in cases in her state with a new surge of vaccines to her state. in places where we have big snurjz cases, raises this interesting question. can we flood those zones with more vaccines than they might otherwise get? i mean, it makes sense, at least in layman's terms, in trying to get around the epidemic on the other side of it. for two reasons, right? the risks of having tons of virus floating around, having tons of copious transformation anywhere in the country, it's the same as the risk we had before vaccines. copious transmission means people are getting sick and people are dying. with vaccines, that may be somewhat mitigated by the fact that older people are likely to have vaccine-ininduced immunity now, but rise in cases, rise in hospitalizations, rise

we continue our conversation with michigan democratic governor gretchen whitmer., you have publicly called for a surge of vaccine doses to your state, but the white house's covid response coordinator, as we played at the top of the show, shut that down. does this -- does this offer that they're giving you and vaccinators, of resources, make up for the fact that they're not surging you doses? >> governor: let me start by saying this: we did not have a national strategy for a long period of time. and then the biden white house came in, and we have one. and by and large, they're doing a great job. i would submit, though, that in an undertaking of this magnitude, with such consequences, it is important to recognize where there might need to be some adjustments on the way. we're seeing a surge in michigan, despite the fact we have some of the strongest policies in place, mask mandates, capacity limits, working from home, so despite all of that, we are seeing a surge because of these variants. and that's precisely why we're really encouraging them to think about surging

that's what we're asking people to continue to do. >> on the vaccine issue, governor whitmer and youthe biden administration to send more doses to the state. so far they have refused. they say that the fairest thing to do is to allocate doses based on the state's population. the white house says they're sending extra resources for testing and help use the doses you already have at a faster pac pace. is that happening? >> michigan was the first state to deploy mobile testing and mobile vaccination units in the country. we have huge vaccination sites at ford field in detroit. what is even more important is the fact that vaccine doses and administering them, and the state of michigan is a hot spot. we need a national hot spot strategy that does that for the entire country and right now michigan is that hot spot. that's why we're in every conversation we're having at every level of the federal government. we're asking for more help, for more vaccines and we're going to continue to advocate those. we have those conversations every single day. and what's happening in michigan, as we know,

what we did is we actually heard from governor whitmer this morning on cbs's face the nation, echoed what was said on friday, they are not giving up on those efforts to try to convince the federal government to increase the amount of doses, vaccine doses that they are receiving here in the state of michigan, especially as they continue to see these numbers, infection rate currently at about 18%. so when you look at the graphic, when you look at the chart you can see that that -- those trends continue to go up. it's not just infections but hospitalizations as well. those numbers we're seeing at the hospitals now, getting very close to what we saw at the beginning of the pandemic. so what we heard from the governor right now is that she will continue to try to convince the government to increase their doses, though the biden administration has said that perhaps right now is not the right time to do so, especially with the potential impact on vaccine supplies. take a listen. >> by and large they're doing a great job. i would submit, though, that in an undertaking of this magnitude with

the answer is yes, governor whitmer is right. we are seeing half a dozen states where appointments are going unfilled and hitting hesitancy, sort of walls and they are not getting all the vaccines out and then you have states like michigan with large outbreaks and desperate to get more people vaccinated, and you have to shift the vaccines to where the infections are and that's the best way to save lives. >> when you see what's happening right now, on one hand we are accelerating vaccine distribution, and it seems -- you tell me, i feel as if the administration has decided since states are not going to listen to mitigation and the country has fatigue and we have one weapon we can deploy and that's the vaccine. is that -- are we basically giving up on everything else? >> no, you see president biden wearing a mask, and the cdc director is still telling people to be careful. >> i understand that, but you get my point, doctor, yeah, they are emphasizing what they think a majority of people will listen to, i guess, is my point? >> look

and, governor whitmer, thank you for being here. first, i just want to get a top-line read on how the state of michigan is doing. >> well, we know that we are seeing a resurgence of covid, all across our state. and i think, some of it is because we, as a nation, did not rally to beat this virus. we have turned on one another and this virus has taken an incredible toll on us. we, in michigan, still smart policies in place. i don't currently have all the same powers i did, a year ago. but we do still have a mask mandate. we do, still, have capacity requirements. i mean, we have got some of the strongest protocols in the country. and yet, this virus has come raging back. we, for a long time, kept -- kept spread amongst the lowest across the country. which means, now that we have variants here, we have got a lot of people that didn't catch the virus, which is a good thing. but now, they are vulnerable. and that's why we're really pushing to try to get people vaccinated. to use monoclonal antibodies for people that are diagnosed with cov

emily: governor whitmer asking the biden administration for more support on the vaccine front.n the meantime, you have pfizer and biontech seeking to expand vaccine access to teenagers. what can you tell us about how ready the vaccine is for adolescents? jodi: pfizer and biontech did say, they announced that they are going to be making a request to expand the emergency use authorization they have in the u.s. and other countries to include 12 to 15-year-olds and studies have shown that the vaccine is as effective in preventing serious cases of covid from that age group as it is for adults. it is a good sign, they are asking for that. governor whitmer saying she would like more vaccines sent to her state because of that surge, although the government is saying -- the federal government is saying they are not changing their policy, they are sending vaccine to states based on population, not on the severity. for now, they are not going to get more and michigan, but it looks like that authorization may be soon coming for younger adults -- sorry, for teenagers, and that would be a bi
