phil matier and willie brown are talking politics behind the protests.emen, good morning. >> reporter: well, good morning. and you know, it is interesting. all the attention has been on oakland especially last night at that city council meeting. did you catch some of the vibe coming out of there? >> i did. larry reid was, you know, quite the guy trying to keep order. and it's difficult when the police chief is testifying and is getting heckled and shouted down. >> it's interesting, i sensed -- i talked to councilmembers going into this meeting and we see the results of it. there was a real shift after wednesday night. the violence that followed the general strike really put a -- turned a lot of people off to the camp. they support the movement but the idea of the camp being out there is starting to rub some of the council people the wrong way or at least worry the supporters that they have on the council. >> if "occupy oakland" as well as "occupy oakland" denver, san francisco and other places come up with a list of agenda of demands that can be met by c

as his good friend, willie brown, said about george, he said george's only problem is when he has had two drinks he thinks he is invisible. and george was swept into office in 19 -- well, not swept but he won the election in 1976 with the backing of gays and neighborhood organizations, with a new force in city politics that was spear-headed by the burton brothers and willie brown and their democratic machine. george moscone was part and parcel of that. harvey milk's background was very, very different. harvey came from new york. he was a smart new york jew, liked to crack wise, and he had a background in finance and the teeter. he had been in the navy, played football in high school. but eventually he became the rosa park of the gay movement, the fellow who stood up and went to the front of the bus and said, i'm going to be a city supervisor. i'm gay and i'm going to be elected. of course, he was, which was quite an extraordinary thing. especially because at that anytime the city -- in the mid-70s, san francisco was undergoing an integration crisis. maybe the only gay integration cris

you know, there's jane fonda, willie brown, angela davis, and on the outside, people's temper looked good. i talk in the prologue that for me, growing up as i did with a, you know, a black brother and always feeling like a misfit and longing for a place to belong, from the -- if i had come to a temple service on a sunday morning and seen this, i would have definitely had been interested. my brother, david, and i, you know, i would have been interested because of his message of social justice. i would have been interested because there was real love between temple members. i mean, having grown up in the church, a church is so much more than just its leader. it's the relationship you have with the other members and your kids befriending others, and like, for example, a young man like clayton from oakland whose mother didn't give a damn about him and stole feed to get something to eat while his younger brother cried with hunger, the temple offered him a place to sleep. the temple got him out of jail on early release. the temple encouraged him to get his ged. the temple ran all kinds of

mark halperin is a senior political analyst, and willie brown is a former mayor of san francisco. mark, you look at all these, and here are some of the highlights from last night's elections. in ohio, by two to one, voters soundly rejected an anti-union law that limited collective bargaining by public employees. the cleveland plain dealer reported, quote -- "without question, the results will be viewed as a momentum builder for democrats nationwide and should encourage president barack obama." in mississippi, a personhood amendment which would have defined personhood starting at conception was defeated. this would have outlawed all abortions and many forms of contraception. in arizona, the republican president of the state senate, architect of the state's harsh anti-immigration law lost in a recall election. he's out. and in maine, voters rejected a law that ended same-day voter registration. there was one defeat for the president. in ohio, voters went two to one in rejecting the president's health care individual mandate. voters supported that proposal that says no federal, state

as you heard from willie brown, it's getting a lot of criticism. so it is fairly new and who knows? , you know, depending on the results of this, people might be really upping the call to get rid of it. in fact, there is a measure right now bouncing around with the board of supervisors to get rid of it altogether. >> too late now. we know that in 1996, when willie brown was the mayor, he clipped the wings of the city administrators. so right now, for all practical purposes, we have the legislative branch and executive branch. our only saving grace is the budget analyst and the comptroller's office. and hopefully the mayor's office and the budget office will somehow help the constituents of san francisco. was it pains me is that in our shelters, we do not give our people, not even a bed to sleep. we have poor people that are given a sheet, while the so- called representatives are talking about a rainy day fund. if the san francisco unified school district has a problem, do not rely and our city every year for a rainy day fund. that is not called for. what we really need to do is to be compassionate and not allow our indigent population, our poor population, to be sitting on a chair day in and day out, for months, when we need to give them a bath. i have two seconds, may i have it? willie brown was spending $200 million per year on social services, for 9,000 to 13,000 homeless people. the program caramel long as it would cure homelessness, but it was designed to elevate the author to the next higher office. we're now servicing 13,000 people, but at a cost that is 10 times greater. it is going to non service providers whose business is, what, homelessness. as your mayor, i will monitor and all that does not competitively bid contracts that are sucking up your money, depriving the homeless people of the true help they deserve. that is where the problem is and that is why the problem keeps growing. it is really obvious to me what is happening with the homeless.
