it bears explanation in wisconsin. in wisconsin voters don't register by party. anyone with any community with absentee ballots coming in, whether cast in person or by mail, there is no way to know for sure whether it came from a republican or democrat. the parties will look at the counties where they are coming from and say it's a primarily republican county or primarily a democratic county. so we feel good about the number of ballots coming in. in other states that's not always the case. other states know how many republicans have returned ballots. they know how many democrats returned. they don't know who they voted for but they know a certain number of republican or democratic ballots have been returned in the state. in wisconsin early voting began yesterday. absentee voting has been going on since late september. so after yesterday, i would hazard a guess probably we have over .5 million ballots that have come in. nobody needs who they voted for and they won't until election day when they are processed. the ballots aren't counted in terms of opening them and

of wisconsin milwaukee. welcome to the program. >> so your take on the state of the presidential race in wisconsin? >> as a professor, it is fun to live in a battleground state. it's almost like a privilege. the people who live in 43 states , we in these seven states are getting a lot of love. it is so political and so politicized that just the other day when i was watching a newscast in a commercial station , i'm used to seeing sort of a political ad here and there but in this case, every single one was political. my charge dropped. i've never seen so much political advertising. some of these ads are just brutal. i've never seen it. i'm finding this interesting as a professor, but as a private citizen, a resident of wisconsin, i have to tell you, i can't wait until this election is over. the people i talk to here in milwaukee, they all say the same thing. they want it to be over. host: i wonder in addition to the ads, there's a lot of visits by the candidates. have you gotten a chance to go to a rally or me

what's going on and wisconsin will look at white voters in wisconsin. you go back to the result in 2020, right donald trump won them by five points. you look at where the polling averages today. donald trump's only up by a point why is that? so important? because take a look here, look at the swing states white voters in the swing phase. look what percentage white voters make up in wisconsin, 88%, ten points more than any other swing swing-state, far more than georgia 56 are arizona. 64 white boaters are very important in wisconsin and kamala harris is doing better than joe biden did four years ago. >> and 88%. and that's sometimes numbers just give you pause and make you think, all right, so then you go to michigan. you're talking about the path through the great lakes, harry, but i am curious about one place in michigan because harris and trump are both going to be there tomorrow. so broken be in the same place, the same day, not just the same state, the same county. oakland county. what makes that county so important? >> what makes okay? and so impor

i will say this about michigan and wisconsin.f you look at -- look, too much of the conversation, by the way, is asymmetrical. it is all about harris and what she's got to do. but quite frankly, i'm more -- if i'm on the other side, i'm calling this, look, it is just as much about what donald trump has got to do. if you look at michigan and wisconsin, where is donald trump not in the polling, but where he is on election day? he's always at 47, 48%. that 47%, 48% worked in 2016 when you had a lot of third party voting. i would argue that he's got to break above 47, 48% in michigan and wisconsin in order to win those states without a lot of third party voting. and not from polls, but in the polling also shows he's always at a ceiling of 48%. i would argue from a strategic standpoint, i think the challenge is for how does donald trump raise the ceiling in those states where we had back-to-back elections where we know where voters ended up and it is 47%, 48% for donald trump. >> he can raise his ceiling, which has generally and for a

>> well, the biggest third party factor in wisconsin the law is the law here. and we know that there are a lot of republican voters who do not want to vote for trump. we saw them voting in greater numbers for nikki haley in the primary primary than we're uncommitted votes in the democratic primary. in the spring elections here in the final stretch, i think there's a lot of republicans deciding, do they vote for rfk? do they vote for harris? do they vote at all? we know that there are also people who disagree with vice president harris over over a number of policies. but absolutely we want to stop trump and our message to them is that if you want to ensure that trump can't come into the office, right? and absolutely blank. check to netanyahu, which would be bad for both israel and for palestinians. if you want to make sure that we don't wind up with a dictatorship on day one using us troops to crush dissent in the united states that harris is your candidate. but when you include the third-party voters in the electorate as the marquette university law school did.

and wisconsin. so what more can you tell us about her plans tonight? >> you know, when it comes to the state of wisconsin, obviously democrats have a lot of regrets from what happened 2016 when donald trump won the state. harris very clearly trying to make up ground. there are at least not do what was done in 2016. this is her fifth visit to the state since she got into the race. what's interesting though, with this particular visit is where it's going to be. it's in front of latah county. this is not a democratic stronghold. donald trump, actually, from 2016 to 2020 expanded his margin in this state has expanded his vote share, but where she's giving this speech matters in ripon is a town in fonda lack, known as the birthplace of the republican party. and it's all about margins here, yes, didn't need to run a big vote in dane county. they need to run up big vote in milwaukee county. if you were the harris campaign, but if you can keep margins down trump strongholds like bottleneck, that will help to, given how close these states are going to be disaff

so coming back to wisconsin always feels to me more than a little bit like coming home. i want you to know the last time i was here campaigning was 20 years ago, in 2004. although politics divided us certainly in that year, we were united in our admiration for the packers legendary star. [applause] and one of the most special and memorable days i had on any campaign was the day we got to spend with him, which included a personal tour of lambeau field. so very special to be back again. now, you all know of course that here in ripon, the republican party was founded. it was founded in a meeting in 1854 in the little white schoolhouse. and it was founded by people who were opposed to slavery. it was that republican party, the party of lincoln and eisenhower, the party of reagan and bush, it's that party that i belonged to my entire life. i volunteered on my first presidential campaign. i already told you how old i am. [laughter] in 1976, when i was 10 years old, and i was ceiling envelopes for president ford -- sealing envelopes for president ford's reelection campaign. i c

charlie sykes, wisconsin native, moderating that discussion. how did it play in wisconsin?me run in wisconsin. this spoke to conservative voters who know in their heart that trump is the wrong person for this moment. they were in wausau county, which trump won by 20 points. this was in the town of brookfield, which trump won by 8 1/2 points but there are a ton of folks in red areas of wisconsin who watched what happens on january 6th, who watched what happens when dobbs came in and overturned roe versus wade come and you know that they cannot vote for trump again. tonight kamala harris reached out and said you can vote for me and she was joined by republicans who said the same thing. the water is fine this is the moment to put country over party and that's the message tonight, they heard. >> she came into wisconsin today, according to the washington post poll, three points ahead of donald trump. this campaign stop is targeted toward republicans. is that the spot to target at this point for her? >> the way you win wisconsin is by doing everything, everywhere, all at once we
