i turn it over to wolf blitzer now on this breaking news. >>> i'm wolf blitzer in "the situation room." a shooting in an ap unapolis, maryland. five people killed and that the shooter is in custody. cnn's brian todd on the scene for us there in annapolis. brian, first of all, update the viewers on the latest. what are you hearing? >> wolf, we are hearing one shooter in custody. police believe that's the only shooter involved this incident. they have cleared the building from a tactical standpoint behind me, meaning they don't believe there are other shooters and searching. as you mentioned, five fatalities confirmed. could be more confirmed later. multiple people injured. key piece of information coming out is that the shooter is not cooperating, at least did not cooperate initially with law enforcement according to a law enforcement source. the shooter was found apparently with no i.d. on him. according to one source telling cnn the shooting occurred in the newsroom of "capital gazette" here in annapolis and law enforcement not giving many details on that. we do know five fatalities.

now the james wolfe, who's been there for 31 years, that may be someone you know. i know the two committees in the house and senate don't have much interactions but occasionally, is james wolfe a senate staffer on the intelligence committee who you have met? >> i don't know, lawrence. i've been in the senate skiff before and encountered some of the senate staff, but i don't know that person by name. so i really couldn't tell you whether i've met him. >> just for people who don't know how this works, that's a very common situation between house and senate. there's little interaction between the committees and certainly less interaction between the senate committee staff and members of the house committee. congressman schiff, there are other developments on your committee. you released today, publically, released a letter you sent to devin nunes a couple weeks ago, asking for something like this. asking that the committee assist in or refer to the justice department for possible investigation for perjury witnesses who appeared before your committee. that was your req

how did wolfe pop up on the fbi's radar?now the fbi and justice department has been aggressively pursuing these leaks. it was back in october of 2017 that these fbi agents approached james wolfe. they said they were investigating the disclosure of classified information. it's important to note, james wolfe was the security director for the senate intelligence committee, meaning he was charged with maintaining and really safeguarding classified and sensitive information for the committee and for those lawmakers. then it was in december of 2017 when james wolfe sat down with fbi agents for a voluntary interview. in that interview, fbi agents asked him if he had had correspondence, communication with several reporters. they also asked him if he had disclosed any sensitive information to them. james wolfe told them no. he also elaborated in an interview as well. last night james wolfe was arrested and he was charged with lying to the fbi, lying to federal investigators. now we're expecting him at the federal courthouse in baltim

wolf. >> pamela brown at the white house. thank you. joining us now, democratic congressman david cisseliny of rhode island and part of the judiciary and foreign affairs committee. thanks for joining us. i want to get your reaction to our top story as you know the former trump campaign chairman paul manafort is headed to jail after prosecutors alleged he tried to tamper with witnesses ahead of the trial. how much additional pressure is this going to put on manafort to cooperate with the special counsel? >> well, i think a tremendous amount of pressure. look, this is now an individual who will remain in custody pending his trial who has been found by a grand jury to have been -- more probable cause than not that he attempted to tamper with witnesses and interfere with the testimony or change their testimony. this is a very serious charge. and it is going to be obviously -- give manafort to think long and hard of whether he wants to come clean and tell the special counsel what he knows or remain in jail and face serious charges. >> he'll

leaking of classified information that ultimately led to wolfe.ontacted wednesday by nbc news, wolfe denied he was under investigation. the "times" claims prosecutors secretly seized years' worth of reporters' phone and e-mail records. in their search, that reporter in question having a previous three-year romantic relationship with wolfe. she told "the new york times" she did not get information from him when they were dating. the democratic and republican heads of the senate intel committee released a statement overnight saying they were, quote, troubled to hear of charges against wolfe. adding this development will in no way interfere with their ongoing investigation. >>> in just hours president trump will depart for quebec for the annual g7 summit, meeting with leaders from the uk, japan, italy and france. and the commander in chief is already starting a war of words with our two closest allies, accusing canada and france of levying massive tariffs and creating barriers against the u.s. referring to canadian prime minister justin trudeau as in

wolf immediately. first of all, his circumstances of his departure from the senate intelligence committee in december were somewhat suspicious. also, it's hard to understate what a breach this is. wolf is charged with protecting classified information that's in the protection of the senate intelligence committee. also to note this is a committee that had avoided a lot of these both political and procedural headaches. the fact this is an individual who was charged with protecting the secrets, the classified and sensitive information of the committee, is the one who may have been responsible for leaking it is really casting a shadow on the committee. >> want you to listen to what congressman schiff had to say about this ordeal. >> leaks are a problem. attacks are a problem with this administration. i have to hope with the extraordinary use of their national security letter or subpoena or whatever device the justice department used to seize the reporter's records, that they followed all the proper procedu
