ktvu claudine wong is joining us now from the scene.llenges facing firefighters when they first arrived. >> reporter: that is right. not an easy fire to fight because they were dealing with down electrical lines. let me show you the situation right now. in front of this building you had several cars. firefighters say they think eight actually were damaged by this fire. this was a used car lot. the building behind it and this building is fairly large. about 3,000 square feet is what they are estimating. you had about 1200 feet of residents and then you have office space and other commercial uses. when they say they got here, the fire was burning over three quarters of the building. let me show you what it looked like. the fire was really coming from all hack les at -- angle at them. a passer by called it in. they got water on it from a distance. because they said down >> jones was worried we were looking through the eight ball. we had high power tension lines coming through here. this is a major service for pg&e. and we had lines droppin

claudine wong ktvu channel 2 news. >>> time now 6:08. san leandro's mayor has dropped the controversial plan to raise the flag of the people's republic of china outside of a city hall next month. mayor steven cassidy says the public should have been able to weigh in on this first. on monday the city council approved flying the chinese flag as a show of support for san leandro chinese community and shows the city is open for critics. but raising that flag would show that they condone human rights violations. chuck reid was fined for violating a state campaign finance law. but the fine is just $1. mayor reid could have received a $35 fine. however the fair political practices commission said the violation was not intentional. last year a pension reform committee funneled $100,000 to rose herrera's reelection. mayor reid says he did nothing wrong because he was not the candidate. >>> petaluma police are stepping up -- the body of a 25- year-old man was found yesterday. while police say the deaths are -- that none of the deaths were suspicio

claudine wong is live in san leandro. >> reporter: fire investigators have cleared the scene. the manager has given us access. this debris pile, they say, is whar was behind the only door to this trailer as rescuers were trying to get in. this is haunting. you can see just how hot this fire burned. all that's left of the home is a shell. the image ravaged by fire. two people were trapped inside despite desperate efforts by neighbors to help them get out. >> i took a crowbar, reached in grabbed the handle and opened the door that way. >> reporter: that was the only door out. once open, he said he couldn't see anyone. inside one victim was conscious and talking and asking for help. >> i said, are you okay? i don't know who she is. she said no, i'm not! , you know, no, i'm not! so my son came out and neighbors came out. we were breaking the windows. it was just a little bit of sploek and of smoke and it went up into a big fire. >> reporter: once the fire got on scene, the trailer was engulfed in flames. crews had it out in a minute. >> they had a lot of other debris, shall we say

live here in hayward, claudine wong, ktvu channel two news. >> thank you claudine. some mysterious attacks on a south bay highway have drivers unnerved many reported their car windows were smashed while they were driving. janine de la vega spoke to one of the victim whose took quick action. >> reporter: this picture was snapped last night, one of the several victims stopped after being lit by something during rush hour. >> there was this big pop and that got me to look at the window and it was shattered so i pulled over quickly, snapped a quick picture and called 911. >> the chp said 10 drivers had their cars smashed while driving there, the latest before 10:00 last night near the capitol expressway exit. they searched but did not find suspects. they suspect it is the work of someone shooting a bb or pellet gun although they found no evidence to back that up. >> i think the reaction initially was normal one of a little bit of anger and the usual string of expletives coming out of someone's mouth. >> he spent the morning cleaning up. he didn't see anyone shooting but

claudine wong joins us live from oakland to tell us why trains may have fewer cars than usual this week. good afternoon. >> reporter: good afternoon, you know bart says a lot of its riders say they want to see the transit system 24-7 like it did during this recent closure but bart said that is not going to happen and this closure gives us a good indication of why. [ cheers ] >> it all happened on schedule and as planned, but as operations went 24-7 on a traffic free bridge that traffic had to go somewhere. so it was 24-7 for bart too. hour after hour, mile after mile, the passengers crowded on, regulars hoping for a seat found themselves with little option but to make room. >> standing today. >> making room for folks who you recall ail drive. >> i knew i could not drive into the city so i took bart. >> but you can have that kind of track without having an impact. >> bart trains ran that far and that is a huge wear and tear. it is over 40 years. >> playing catch up won't happen quickly, they are working over time to get trains back in service, don't be surprised if your train has fewer c

claudine wong joins us now from san mateo with the pictures officers hope will lead to a break in this case. claudine? >> reporter: they certainly think the same person is responsible for all of these burglaries. let me tell you where we are. el camino is just in front of us. one burglary happened there. on this block three happened here and then on the next block over, another two. again all in the same night. let's take you to what we know about what happened. it happened in the overnight hours. not a lot of traffic coming through here at the time. they believe the same thing happened really in all of them. the burglar tried to go in through the rear end of the building targeting cash and anything they could get out very quickly carrying out of there very quickly. they didn't find success in all of the buildings targeted. in fact, in three of the incidents, even though they found evidence that someone tried to get in, nothing was taken. they did however at one of the businesses get some surveillance photos. they are of a single person, a man in his early 20s they believe and again th

claudine wong is the names of the victims, the cause and the struggles firefighters had getting into the house. >> reporter: this man's family woke up to screams. >> very thick smoke billowing out everywhere. >> reporter: firefighters got on seen at 1:40 a.m. and knew this was a life and death situation. >> the mom had indicated when we got on scene there were people inside. i believe particularly saying their baby is inside. >> reporter: firefighters say the garage fair wasn't that bad but they still had trouble getting in. that's because the entryway has this metal security door with two locks. to get inside they had to use a metal saw to cut through it a mother, father, grandfather and 1-year-old lived inside the home. according to firefighters, the mother escaped out the back. raymond was in the back asleep in the garage. the chief says both were asleep and may have been woken up by the smoke detectors. >> she wasn't in the crib. >> reporter: you think she woke up? >> probably. >> reporter: investigators say the fire was accidental and blame either electrical problems or smoking

claudine wong joins us now to tell us how the pursuit ended. >> reporter: we are on tam rick drive. it ended here. you can see the front fender of the car and the tree and the fence. it stopped it from going straight into this house. across the street i can show you the car that is is involved. on the other corner we have chp out here. the man you are looking at them talking to right now was a passenger in that vehicle. let me show you what the seen looked like a little bit earlier so we can go through what the chp says happened. it was about 3:00 this morning when officers spotted this car going down the freeway at a high rate of speed. they said 80 miles an hour. the car got off the freeway and went about 60 miles an hour through residential streets. that blew through a couple of stop signs and made a turn. didn't quite make the turn. that is how they ended up in the house. there was one man behind the wheel. we talked to the man in the passenger seat. here's what he said happened. >> i can say i never went around the turn. and i out of nowhere the turn kind of you know the tires

on mare island, claudine wong, ktvu 2news. >> lawyers for the disgraced mayor are due back in court a little over an hour now asking a judge to dismiss a charge against him that stems from allegations he sent a phoney campaign mailer disparaging a candidate running against one of his aids, he resigned earlier this year and pleaded guilty to corruption and theft of public funds. the impersonation charges were filed after that deal was made. >>> the state's fair political practices commission has fined san jose mayor chuck reid for violating state campaign finance laws but instead of the regular $3500 fine he was only charged 1 dollar, that is because the commission concluded the violations were not intentional. the case involved a pension reform committee funneling money to city council woman rose herrera's campaign and reid controls that committee. >>> statewide unemployment rates released today show thousands of new jobs were added in california but the state's jobless rate increased slightly, meaning more people are out looking for work. according to the state employment development

claudine wong has been on the scene since 4:30. us now to tell us about the challenges firefighters faced. good morning, claudine. >> reporter: good morning. i'm gonna step out of the shot really quickly. i want to show you the man walking up to the front of the house right now, i just spoke with him. that's howard simon. he lives behind the home. said he wanted to bring flowers to leave them for this family because he is so heartbroken about what's happened out here. he said he woke up to hearing people yelling outside of his home. his daughter woke up as well. they looked outside of the house and saw smoke billowing and fire billowing out of the back of the home and firefighters breaking through windows that was the rescue effort already underway. we talked about the front of this home. firefighters when they got here said they actually didn't see that much fire when they first arrived about 1:40 this morning. but they did see the father. she was outside -- father. she was outside of the home telling them there were people inside

ktvu channel 2 reporter claudine wong joins us more with the warning on the north bay and east bay hills. claudine? >> reporter: well, good morning. not bad up here yet, but it's going to be a long event. this will take us through tomorrow. we came up to the oakland hills, because obviously they do take fire danger very seriously. we have a beautiful shot to show you of the bay this morning. it's really the hills that steve mentioned that are going to be the problem over the next couple of days, if there are problems. so people up here are getting prepared. how are they getting prepared? well, a lot of it has to do with making sure those trees are cut back and pruning, because pg&e knows that could cause problems in terms of power outages and things that we see when those lines come down, when lines come down, starting a fire. all of that's all very connected. pg&e has 96 tree trimming crews from around the bay area focused on the la miranda hills. the defensible space you create can protect your home. >> if you have a tree overhanging your house, you need to cut it back so that it's at

claudine wong is there now.ou say pge just wrapped up working on a downed power line, too. >> that's right. let me show you what's happening here on laurel street in menlo park. a city worker now trying to get this tree out of the road. this one big branch of the tree that sits in this neighbor's yard. if you aren't awake yet, you are now because a lot of work that's loud work. as of 4:00 this morning, this branch fell from this tree in this yard right in front of this home. the problem was not only did it fall into the roadway but if you take a look to the right of it, you can see a lot of power lines that are right next to it. when it came down, it took a power line with it. so crews are out here pretty quickly in terms of police crews and such but they didn't want to go near anything because the lines were live. pge got out here just really within the last half-hour. they are able to shut off the power quickly and it allowed this work to get under way and clear up the roadway and get back to business. coming

i also want to welcome the relative of the late wong fu yen who is with us today. both mayor and chiu mentioned this. we have a new wall to recognize the special contribution that asians and asian americans have made to this part of the waterfront and the city. as was mentioned, 9 the waterfront was the place asian immigration came to the united states and the california gold rush certainly brought a steady influx of asian american laborers who helped to build the infrastructure of this country, including our railroads. on june 23rd, 1877, a huge mob attacked chinese businesses here and headed for the local symbol of chinese immigration, the pacific mall wharf where we stand today. they tried to burn the beer, but failed. i think it's important that we recognize and remember our history because as we move forward, as we celebrate our victories, our progress, it's really important to remember those that came before us and the history that was here today. but most importantly, i'm here to celebrate this open space, will be an incredibly important addition and resourc
