cbs2's janelle burrell is live in yonkers for us. janelle? >> reporter: well, imagine an afternoon like today without power. that was the case for a lot of people here in yonkers this morning but we just found out moments ago that these coned crews have been working steadily overnight into the they just have turned back power on to this area of yonkers. after that tree came crashing down on to a car and transformer on one of the most uncomfortable days of the season. the gust of wind and pounding rain toppling a huge tree directly onto the car right in its path. smashing it like a wrecking ball and destroying a transformer. >> we had like -- lightning bolts in our -- >> it was a blue flash. >> explosion of sound. >> reporter: it happened just outside of enrico and alex's home on grove street in yonkers around 12:30 this morning, they say when the tree fell they actually saw the electricity surging inside. >> it was like having a lightning strike in the house. >> yeah -- >> that's what it was like. >> blue flash. >> i found a charred -- there'

the mayor of yonkers said put it >> it's a very big ocean out there. there's a lot of places that you can barge and store fuel oil. you don't need to put it off the shore offense these communities. >> reporter: the maritime association told me earlier today that's a crazy idea. he says that you can't take a vessel that is on the river and runs into trouble with fog and he said for them that is a nonstarter. the public comment period takes place for another couple of weeks. it ends september 7th. after that, then the coast guard has to review the proposal and see what ideas that will actually try to put in place. the town says they can't wait for that. all of these communities, they say we want a head start on this because we don't want those barges here. i'm roseanne colletti. today his exaggeration has cost him possibly millions as sponsors begin to distance themselves from the disgraced swimmer. david ushery joining us now with the story. >> first speedo, then ralph lauren, now gentle hair removal all cutting ties with the controversy swimmer. we can

and that is why together today because there is a harmful threat. >> reporter: the yonkers mayor is one of many officials against the coast guard's proposal to put 10 commercial shipping anchorages on the hudson river between yonkers and -- >> none of us have received notification. i read about it in the paper. >> reporter: the coast guard is considering the proposal after receiving requests from the shipping industry. to tie to a dock and sit alongside developing waterfronts north of new york city. >> if they can't safely find a place to get out of the traffic, they're creating a hazard. so this is a safety issue. >> reporter: edward kelly is the executive director of the maritime association, one of several groups requesting the anchorage sites. >> this is to provide safe, designated anchorages for the traffic in the river that's handling vital economic goods for the communities in queson charge against the sites. he issued this petition called ban the barge as well as a graphic that lays out where the barges would be located 70 miles up along the hudson. >> creating environmental pro

he was one of four people responsible for the drive-by shooting at a burger king in yonkers last september that killed 23-year-old michael nolan. his family says despite the guilty pleas, they'll never have him. i don't get that. i don't get to hear him say it back to me. i'll never have grandchildren from him. >> nolan was a gifted left-handed pitcher who had been drafted by the oakland as right before his death. police say nolan was not the intended target. >>> police in new jersey are searching for the driver who crashed in to a home and then took off. surveillance video shows the moment the car slammed in to the the house damaged but so were the two parked cars out front when the driver hit them before sailing in to the house. the homeowner says about 5 minutes after the crash, the driver backed out of the home and drove off. by the time police arrived the car was gone. >> i don't know how he left the scene. you could see the skid marks where they're standing. upstairs and smoky. >> unfortunately no one inside the house was hurt. >>> a stunning accusation tonight from new jersey senate

it moved over the city, yonkers, and the bronx. these storms have been highly electrified partially due to all the heat that's been building in the area the last couple of weeks. today though quiet. beautiful, fantastic. we are tracking some rain south of pittsburgh, and another line moving through the detroit area which may bring us some showers late tonight or early in the morning. 82 degrees right now in the city. temperatures in general are about five to ten degrees cooler than what we've seen in the last 24 hours. the humidity was not as high today. it's around, but mainly because of a north to northwest wind. it's a dry direction. we haven't seen much of a factor in that today. the dew point is a measure of the moisture in the atmosphere. all in the 60s, which is muggy to sticky, but not tropical or truly uncomfortable. the feels like temperatures a few spots mid to upper 80s. feels like 88 in the city. 90 in long branch. gone are the 100-degree feels like temperatures for a while. we'll dip down to the upper 70s by midnight.

a fire in yonkers has led to a series of burglaries. residents say thieves broke into their apartments after they were forced to evacuate the building. cbs2's lou young has the story. some of the 105 people out of their homes following monday's 4-alarm fire in yonkers have now learned their evacuated apartments were looted. we weren't allowed inside the building but one of the displaced victims complained outside, this man's relative translated over the phone. >> it was about $3000. his tv and his shoes and some clothes. security guards it was easy pickings for the thieves because all the apartment doors had been removed. six apartments were robbed of jewelry, electronics and cash. all the victims had already lost too much. >> this guy, for instance, works at a car wash and carries his passport with him to prove his citizenship. the money he lost was to pay his rent and credit card bills. this woman has been staying with relatives in brooklyn and says the once wide open >> we had to wait. i don't know how long. >> first it was wide open

then in the north it stretches patterson, clifton, greenberg and yonkers probably after 1:00 a.m. you'll get it there. notice in and around the city if you've been outside and you live in the urban areas it still feels stifling. the heat index is still around 90, astoria, passaic. but to the north and west, we're seeing a little cooler conditions here, drier air slowly starting to work its way in. 91 is what it feels like in the city right now. the actual temperature is about 85. humid tomorrow. not so much tonight and the morning. it will still be around by tomorrow afternoon, we'll get a breeze, it is much drier. the humidity plunges. temperatures will be in the upper 80s to around 90 so still pretty toasty in spots. but a wind makes it feel more comfortable. sunshine and no risk for thunderstorms. watch out, though, if you're going to the shore areas because currents. don't go out too far. uv index of course very high tomorrow, temperatures in the 80s to near 90. no risk of storms tomorrow, but we might see a couple showing up thursday morning in some spots. storm spot storms h
