the camp is a former native american village on the river next to yosemite national park. it's been kind of a sacred gathering place for thousand of years. and today it's a place where the jewish community gathers, about 1200 children every summer, for, i would say, life transforming appearances. >> we were founded in 1925 and we've had the same mission ever since. and the mission really guides everything we do. so there's kind of four parts. the first part being we want to raise children to have positive self image and self esteem. we train counselors to bring out the best in each kid and hopefully leave kids feeling better with about who they are than when they got there. the second part is building a cooperative community. it starts in the bunk. there are 12 children in a bunk and they have to compromise, live together, work together and each child feels a unit community and there is a camp committee. the goal is kids leave feeling inspired by community and want to create communities like the one they had at tawonga. >> here we are in mid-2013 and camp tawonga was found

each summer thousands of people stay in the village which sits near some of yosemite's most popular tourist spots. the nationalk service wants to avoid a repeat of last summer's deadly hanta virus outbreak and they've gone to great lengths to clean up the area. this is a google earth map of the yosemite valley.. curry village is located... here...on the valley's south side. the tents where the hanta virus infections were found are in what's called the signature series cabins. these cabins are heated with insulated double canvas walls...and that was part of spread through contact with mice droppings and urine and the rodents were nesting inside the cabin's double walls. attempts to clean away the problem were unsuccessful so the park service decided to remove more than 90 of these signature cabins in an effort to permanently stop the disease from spreading. they're also aggressively cleaning the other cabins and working to educate visitors about how hanta virus spreads. when the park service also recently removed dozens of cabins that had been closed since 2008 when a rockslide smashed into another section of c

soldiers up to yosemite and sequoia every summer to control the parks, to keep the poachers out and to begin the construction of roads. the first federal superintendent of sequoia national park was colonel charles young. he happened to be the third african-american to graduate from west point. he went on to become the first black colonel in the army. amazing story. i believe he'll be honored sometime later this year by some sort of a national monument at his home in ohio. so, pretty interesting fellow and pretty amazing leadership demonstrated. today our rangers across the country perform modern-day public services, often away from municipalities. so, we're the only game in town at yosemite. we perform search and rescue police, emergency services, medical, even corner duties. closer to home, we have urban [speaker not understood] here in san francisco and at the national mall. so, we have a sprat strong cadre of rangers that help in incident managements, presidential visits, americas cup here, most recently helping with the city and the coast guard and even katrina and the gulf war spill most recently. closer to home the golden gate bridge connects not only our park lan
