[captions copyright national cable satellite corp. 2017] host: we kell tom republican congressman matt gates, covering the state's pan handle in florida. sits on the house you budget, judiciary committee and armed services committees. glad to have you with us. with the anticipated announcement today, republicans are about to release their tax plan. we have been talking about it for a long time. i know you are headed to a meeting soon here. you might have to leave us early, what can you tell us about the details of this tax plan? guest: we're excited the republican tax plan will simplify the tax code. it will broaden the base of taxpayers so that we can lower rates for all americans. and really get the economy moving again. one of the things that we'd like to see is moreau bust g.d.p. growth. we think that there's some specific features of this tax plan that could make a substantial contribution to that. first would be bringing back the trillions of dollars in assets that are currently

talk about youngstown and akron.u talk to the people who hire people there, what do they say? what do we do with this? if we are investing in workers and equipment, a lot of people would be happy. rep. ryan: corporate profits are as high as they've ever been. if a corporation believes they can make an investment and higher people and make more profit, they have the cash to do it right now. they do not need the tax cut in order to be able to do it. what we need, i believe, is the public and private partnerships. we need tools like the new market tax credit, like the historic tax credit, that have kept companies in places like akron, ohio, like a good year. these tools were used to keep goodyear in akron and they were used for other companies as well in our region. those are the things that really helped. the corporations have the cash and if they want to invest and make more, they have it readily available. where i think the democrats are wrong, we cannot be the party that is hostile to business. just because i have a

this morning, i was in -- drove from cleveland to youngstown. i was in youngstown, ohio, at teamsters local 377 talking to workers, maybe 200 of them in the room. mostly workers and retirees, most of them retirees who are in danger of having their pensions cut, pensions they earned over a lifetime of hard work. understand how that happens. when workers are at the bargaining table, whether it's teamsters, whether it's electricians, whether it's steelworkers, whether it's sciu, when workers are at the bargaining table, they're so often to give -- willing to give up wages today in order to have a secure retirement in five years, ten years, 20 years, for 30 years. s that -- that's what these workers chose to do whether they work for roadway over the road, whether they were working with -- for any number of companies, they were willing at the bargaining table to give up higher wages today to have money to set aside that was then invested in often in wall street. we'll get to that in a minute. it's bad in you that these workers and these pensions they

what will be the impact of him doing that on the ground in akron in youngstown? >> well, it certainly is welcome but it's underwhelming because there's not any money there. you lock at trumbull or portage county, my district, you dmeed money on the ground to help, money for law enforcement, money for the first responders, addressing a lot of these issues and mostly you need the money for treatment. i mean, this is not alcohol addiction. these drugs are very potent. a 30-day or 60-day stay in rehab is not enough. you need probably three, four, maybe even five months to get yourself off of this stuff and get yourself well. and i think sometimes a lot of people just don't understand the level of devastation in some of these communities. >> you're talking money, nationwide, how much would you like to see going towards this crisis? >> well, we isn't a let or the the president a few months back to fully fund all of the programs and the comprehensive addiction and recovery act we passed a few months ago that was a bipartisan bill, we had democrats and republicans workin

that's debt that's going to go on to the family in akron, ohio or youngstown, ohio.to pay it. all the while the benefits for corporate america with the corporate tax, for example, is made permanent, and any slight benefit that may go to a working class family is gone after just a year or two and millions of american working class families are going to see a tax increase. if you look at the deductions, for example, student loan deduction, gone. medical health care deduction for health care costs, gone. if you're a graduate student, you're going to see 300 to 400% increase in your tax bill, and as i said in the speech on the house floor, the salt in the wound is that they keep the deduction that allows a corporation to deduct the expenses and write off the expenses for moving jobs from the united states to other countries. in this day and age, after what president trump campaigned on in places like ohio, michigan and wisconsin, this is a joke that they would keep that in there, and the american people are finding out the true colors of this president, and i will tell y
