abc7 news south bay reporter zach fuentes has been following the story and has more. >> viva sj is a popular event that closes down miles of city streets for cycling and vendors. the next one sunday is set to go as planned, but how often it comes back may now be in question, all because of an agreement that was reached to stop a strike. more than 4500 city workers were threatening to walk off the job mid-august after tense negotiations. a deal was reached between the city and a coalition of two unions, workers with ifp local 21 and afscme 101 got a 14.5 to 15% wage increase over three years, with a 6% hike in the first year. now the city says to meet the first year increase, it may have to cut some funding to viva sj and other critical city services. the cuts in year one of this contract might amount to about $4 million and include things like viva parks, viva kelly crossing guards in front of schools, traffic lights, synchrony. asian union representatives were unavailable to speak on camera friday, but a spokesperson says they don't believe the cuts are necessary. they pointed us to

as abc seven news south bay reporter zach fuentes has been tracking the work. >> that's just some ofork that contractors for valley water have done, excavating more than 800ft of the more than 1700 feet plans for a tunnel next to anderson dam. the dam and its reservoir, one of the largest sources of water for santa clara county. created to bring water to more than 2 million people is a major project for the public. >> a lot of people don't think about what goes into delivering safe, clean water to their households, but there is a lot and this is, you know, our number one priority right now. the dam was drained after valley water was ordered to rebuild it to meet modern safety standards. >> but before they can do that, the 20 foot wide tunnel has to be finished. >> we're finishing our tunnel project first. next we go to the seismic retrofit, which is the mandate from the state of california. that's when we actually bring down the dam and retrofit the dam. >> valley water says the tunnel will let them release more water faster and safer during major storms or emergencies that could hel

in san jose, zach fuentes, abc7 news. >> help is available in the south bay for those who might have trouble paying for a vital prescription medications. santa clara county has launched a program called med assist to help cover the cost of things like diabetes medication, asthma inhalers and epipen. it's open to people of all ages as the county is inviting people to apply. since it has launched, about 1400 people have enrolled . one of those enrollees shared the difference it has made in her life. i am a diabetic and i have asthma, so i'm fortunate enough to get a payment for two medications and i would encourage anybody to apply for this program. there are income caps, so not everyone qualifies . as a family of four is eligible. they make under $250,000 per year for individuals, the threshold is $100,000. >> psychedelic apps such as magic mushrooms are one step closer to being decriminalized in california yesterday, the state assembly voted in favor of a bill that would allow people age 21 and up to possess and use small amounts of psychedelics. that bill now heads to the state sena

abc7 news south bay reporter zach fuentes was in court today. >> the steps of the federal courthousen san jose were taken over by a group of advocates showing support for a woman who was to be sentenced in a sex trafficking case. the south bay coalition to end human trafficking referred to the woman only as alyssa, who did not want to go on camera tuesday. >> she's been criminalized for the act of trafficking, when in fact, she is a survivor of trafficking. >> the coalition and her attorney say her story represents changes needed in the criminal justice system. >> i think it's important to understand from today that all parties involved in the criminal justice system should be able to better understand sex trafficking, especially when it comes to women like my client, who have a long history of abuse and manipulation. >> this all comes after alyssa became involved with a man in 2015 who was later sentenced for traffic ing. she said she turned to the man in san jose after facing difficulties and was coerced into helping him. >> she was trafficked for three months and she escaped. >> t

abc7 news south bay reporter zach fuentes has been tracking the work.t's work that contractors for valley water have done. >> excavating more than 800ft of the more than 1700 feet plans for a tunnel next to anderson dam. the dam and its reservoir are one of the largest sources of water for santa clara county. created to bring water to more than 2 million people is a major project for the public. >> a lot of people don't think about what what goes into delivering safe, clean water to their households. but there is a lot and this is, you know, our number one priority right now. >> the dam was drained after valley water was ordered to rebuild it to meet modern safety standards. but before they can do that, the 20 foot wide tunnel has to be finished. >> we're finishing our tunnel project first. next we go to the seismic retrofit, which is the mandate from the state of california. that's when we actually bring down the dam and retrofit the dam. >> valley water says the tunnel will let them release more water faster and safer during major storms or emergencie
