zimmerman. re than a year ago on a rainy night in sanford, florida, minutes later, that young man, 17-year-old trayvon martin, carrying skittles, candy, and an iced tea was shot dead. george zimmerman will be on trial fo second-degree murder and today with less than three weeks to trial, there's news on how he plans to defend himself. we're now learning that the zimmerman legal defense includes an effort to raise doubts about trayvon. they released hundreds of photos, videos, text messages and other documents they plan to submit at trial. in many of the pictures, they seem to intend a negative portrait of trayvon, including pictures from trayvon's cell phone showing a gun and someone's hand holding that gun. another photo from his phone showing marijuana plants and one showing him smoking. also, a cell phone photo from trayvon showing him with gold teeth. there's a photo taken from a cell phone reportedly showing a fight. and text messages where trayvon wrote about street fighting. the zimmerman

zimmerman's answer was okay.o evidence to support he continued to pursue. >> no evidence he continued to pursue. it's a key question and the police asked zimmerman about it in one of their interviews. >> when he said are you following him and you said you don't need to do that. what went through your mind? >> he's right. >> you stopped and went back to your vehicle. >> i still wanted to give him an address. >> the police say zimmerman should have returned to his truck but he didn't. in his own walk through with police zimmerman showed how he continued down the sidewalk to get an address before turning around to get an address before coming face-to-face with trayvon. a few months later mr. zimmerman gave this explanation about what he meant. >> i meant i was going in the same direction as him to keep an eye on him so i could tell the police where he was going. i didn't mean that i was actually pursuing him. >> mr. zimmerman says he wasn't following trayvon martin. he was merely going in the same direction as him.

mark o'mara represents zimmerman and joins me now. good to have you back. >> great to see you again. >> on the face of it it's being billed as a pretty bad day for you guys on the defense, because almost all the stuff that you wanted to be admissible was ruled out. how do you see it? >> well, i didn't see it that way at all. i'm not just trying to look for a silver lining. my intent was that we try this case on the five or six minutes it happened way back then on february 26th, and i recall saying that to you, piers, the first time we got together and talked. the intent was that we want to make sure that the information that's available to us, we have, and it doesn't need to be said in opening and shouldn't be said in opening, and only will be used if the state presents their case in such a way that we have to respond with some of that evidence. my hope is none of it gets anywhere near a courtroom but that's only if the state plays by the rules that they're supposed to play by. >> tell me this. what is the relevance, really, of whethe

zimmerman tells the dispatcher that this guy is running and zimmerman who has been watching from his vehicle exits to follow trayvon. this is beyond the bounds of what the neighborhood watch a volunteer has been instructed to do by the police and he is the captain of that watch group. he leaves that vehicle with the guns strapped to his body, which he has been told is not something you should do. the dispatcher asked zimmerman if he was following the boy. he said he is and the dispatcher says he does not need him to do that. what happens over the next few minutes is murky but also the all important part of this case. somehow trayvon and is imminent encounter each other and engaged in a physical altercation. it ends with the zimmerman shooting trayvon in the chest. with this account to the extent that even exist are sketchy and in some cases contradictory. when the police arrived they take zimmerman into custody. rayvon's body is tagged as a ohn doe and taken to the medical examiner's office. at the police precinct zimmerman is interviewed. the lead investigator did not buy his versio

trayvon martin isn't the one on trial here, george zimmerman is. into the mind and thoughts of trayvon martin because it looks very closely at what was in his cell phone, his most personal photos, his most personal text exchanges. and a picture is emerging that the defense for george zimmerman says they will use in court if character ends up becoming an issue with george zimmerman. >> what have you found? >> what we're seeing in these records that are coming out, first of all, the photographs. we're seeing photographs of trayvon martin blowing smoke. we're seeing pictures from his cell phone of marijuana plants. we're also seeing pictures from his phone of a firearm. so the attorneys for george zimmerman saying people could look at that and reasonably draw the conclusion that he was using drugs, did have a fondness for firearms. and they're saying that evidence will come out in trial if they have to debate the character issue here. >> so what does his team think about it? his own legal team, trayvon martin's attorneys for the family? >> he says it'

zimmerman says trayvon martin attacked him first. ruled during opening arguments the defense cannot talk about trayvon martin's drug use, his suspension from school or alleged involvement in fights. the ruling comes a few days after zimmerman's defense released these pictures found on trayvon martin's cell phone, pictures showing marijuana explant the teenager blowing smoke. another one shows somebody holding a hand gun. the defense argued that trayvon martin's past is critical to the case, showing the teen was hostile and that drugs influs his behavior on the night he died. >> says my guy was the aggressor. we say trayvon martin was the aggressive. study suggest aggressive behavior can be residual from marijuana use. >> still, the judge says the jury won't be allowed to see or hear that evidence, at least not for now. the judge made some other big rulings as well. phil is live in our south florida news hub. those rulings were defeats across the board for the defense. >> they were, trace, and they came in quick order from the judge w
