THE MOODY BLUES - FLY ME HIGH
The first release of the "Mark II" Moody Blues, with Justin Hayward, and John Loge now in the group points to where they are going to go . The single did not chart, but by the end of the year they would Have "Days of The Future Passed" .

The studio version sounds just a little more "Moody-like .https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-lQrZpSyevU
THE 5TH DIMENSION - UP, UP, AND AWAY
When people were smelling for pot in any song, some even thought this was one ! LA light soul/ “sunshine pop” group The 5th Dimension had their breakthrough hit with this early Jimmy Webb song . Johnny Rivers was their producer, and had worked with Webb before . The musicians are, of course, the Wrecking Crew .

THE MONKEEES - YOU TOLD ME
Well the Monkees got their wish . This album, “Headquarters” is all them, no studio musicians , and half the song s are written by them . It is also interesting that there are no big singles on it (“Randy Scouse Git” was single in the UK), which I will git to later ).
Sounds like many a mid 60’s pop group, the rhythm section is a little weak, but not bad at all . The Nesmith songs shine here, like this one .

THE STRAWBERRY ALARM CLOCK - INCENSE & PEPPERMINTS
Seems to me this has been on every “Songs of the 60’s” collection ever made from the day it was issued ! LA,s pop psychedelic band, “The Strawberry Alarm Clock” had their moment of fame with this tune .Was a #1 hit .
They get a spot doing this in Russ Myer’s “Beyond The Valley of The Dolls” ! IN 70 .Here Someone has taken the movie footage and combined it with other stuff to make a vid .

ALBER KING - BORN UNDER A BAD SIGN
On May 25 Stax issued this song by the great blues guitar player and singer , Albert King . This, maybe his best know song, was covered by Cream in 68, and, of course is the better know version . But as much as I like the Cream version, I like his better, I'm sure Clapton might agree .

I came upon this music link on a quadraphonic board. I have no comment.

The funny thing about this is that although Lawrence Welk might not known what "toke" was , the musicians in his band would have . Note Myron Floren's little cough (hint) in the into . Maybe our singing couple didn't know ?
I worked with an old Dixieland player . He had all kinds of stories about pharmaceutical , and sexual misbehavior . He did the Disneyland gig, playing at "The Golden Horseshoe", and how stoned they would get while working there . A bunch of the guys in the character suites were stoners, and they lived in the seedy apartments, and motels that surrounded Disneyland back then . If you said your were going to "Br'er Bear's," it meant you were going to get high .
As for the Lawrence Welk show, anytime I see it, I am struck how weird, "Normal" was . Like, I couldn't come up with stuff that strange if I tried .

This was one of the first records I had as a kid and one of the only (but not THE only) records I ever owned that was pressed on ... laminated cardboard!

Yup. I cut it out of the back of a box of Super Sugar Crisp. And let me assure you, kids, Super Sugar Crisp was fucking tasty and Sugar Bear was fucking hip. Everything went to hell when they changed to Super Honey Crisp or Super Golden Crisp. Instead of reefer songs like Up Up and Away In My Beautiful Fucking Hemp Balloon, Sugar Bear today is probably giving away codes for free mp3s of Lady Gaga garbage.

I thought he sounded like Bing Crosby but I don't know. Sugar haze daze.
Alpha-Bits was a favorite too.

I thought the 1964 version was based on Bing Crosby. But the hip 30's edition and not the "Bob Hope and I have a job" edition that came later.
For all you tapers it might be interesting to look at El Bingo's bio. His work on tape recording methods to cut his performance time led to some of the equipment used in the 60's.

And let's face it: it's takes Fonz-levels of self-confidence to pull off the sweater and no pants look.
