For text items if you first only upload the desired thumbnail image with the name of your upload, wait for the thumb to be created and then replace the single image file with the full item file. The thumbnail normally stays and shows what you want.
This may also work for video items but on video the thumbnail is created based on some timeline formula. I have seen that one user uploaded a clock video of the same length as the final upload name, then found the frame from which the thumbnail was created. They then inserted the image which was desired to be the thumbnail at the frame the thumbnail was created. I am certain there are other ways to do this but I am not a programmer.
