Forum: sflan Subject: can I connect to San Bruno from Bernal Heights?

I aimed my cantenna at San Bruno and saw no SFLAN node in my NetStumbler session.(I saw many other nodes, so I know all my hardware is working). I have perfect LoS to SB and am less than 4 miles away.
It occured to me that perhaps all the antennae on SB are directional, and point away from me, is that the case? Is there no omni on SB?

The only node of sflan or barwn i have LoS to is SB, so if I can't connect to SB I am SOL.

Did you find an AP that has the SSID of "BARWN-Public"?

I see no nodes labeled with BARWN or SFLAN.
So, are you confirming that there IS a publicly accessible node on Mount SB? If so, do you believe I should be able to contact it under my circumstances, that is perfect uncluttered LoS and about 3.5 miles from me to the towers?

Depending where you are you may or may not be able to see the AP on Mount San Bruno. The AP is located on the north-west side of the mountain. It should cover most of the southern half of San Francisco, most of Colma and Daly City. Can you find where you are on the coverage map for the SB AP that I posted to this forum eariler? If so, does it indicated you should be covered?

I have checked that coverage map, I am in the covered zone from what I can tell. Here is a map of where I am in relation to SB:

From what you've said, I think I should go ahead and keep trying. I have a DirectTV dish I can adapt to use for this application, maybe that will work.

According the the coverage map, I am in a zone rated at -55 to -60. Would a 3.5in diameter wave-guide antenna be sufficient from 3.5 miles away, w/ great LoS? If not, would an 18in dish work?

It should work. I just tried to log into the Bruno site and it seems to be down. My network monitoring software didn't alert me to this fact. It looks like it has been down since Sunday, 27 July 2003 at 13:40. Sigh. Time to make a trip to Bruno.

Shoot... I see what happened. We changed our SSID's at IA/UL and it wasn't updated on Bruno. Curse the person doing the work... Easy fix. Should be today or tomorrow.

From an AlamedaWireless member's rooftop we couldn't pick up san bruno either, but should be in the -75/-80 range. We were using a 100mW card and a 24dBi and were able to pick up many SF nodes, including SFLAN nodes, but no luck with BARWN. Seems odd, is there an obstruction on the tower?
