you see we're on bailey road south of highway 4 in bay point. you see the vehicle which caught fire. from there, it spread up the hills. they are investigating what caused the vehicle fire. the issue was a lot of wind last night. it is still gusty out. there was a lot of wind. when this car caught fire, the wildfire went up the hills and burned 50 acres. cal fire showed up and they called for a three alarm. one for structure protection because on the other side of the hills is a subdivision that has a number of homes. con fire says it did get close to the homes, probably within 30 feet, but the one thing that saved the homes is the defensible space. >> the community is in the area which completed the weed abatement. it assisted firefighters by tying into the existing abated areas adjacent to homes. it really did help us save the structures. >> reporter: so if you want to come back out here live, you can see up the hill here and it is dark and hard to tell how steep this is. this is one of the challenges firefighters have is the steep terrain. th

utility is asking for another rate hike. >> "today in the bay"'s kris sanchez is live in the south bay. regulators just approved a massive rate hike starting next month. why this new one? >> reporter: well, so pg&e says that this is not specifically about wildfire mitigation, the influx of money they're asking for is not to cut down trees or to underground power lines, this is to stabilize finances. it comes on top of the 13% increase you mentioned that goes into effect next year. pg&e's filing with the california public utilities commission, which regulates pg&e, is for $1.5 billion from customers. the utility's filing says it needs that rate increase to cover the spending that it's done on wildfire prevention and storm repair. the utility got a 13% increase just three weeks ago. you might remember they were asking for 26%, which they did not get. the already approved increase kicks in on new year's day. the request in the most recent filing would not be up for approval until late next year, so lots of time to talk about this. when we have talked with the utility reform network, the a

we go from those 30s way up close to 70 degrees for the south bay. it'll be one of the warmest. 68 in gilroy, 67 morgan hill. right across the east bay, 59 in vallejo down to pleasanton, 63. over to the peninsula, 60 in half moon bay. redwood city, 63. san francisco 59 downtown and north bay 62 in napa and 63 in sonoma. moving into rainfall the storm system develops friday and saturday. it lingers and gets a little stronger here. then it starts to move in sunday, monday and tuesday for widespread rain chances. a sierra snow looks like it could be warmer. we may not see those super snow totals. we will be watching closely here. as far as rain goes, sunday we are looking at a half inch. some could get in on three quarters of an inch. we add on monday and tuesday and total accumulation, 1 to 2 inches for most of the bay area. this south bay can be a little bit less around three quarters of an inch. we could use every single drop that's going to be on the way. saturday, best day of the weekend. 66 in san francisco. for the inland valley, 68 on saturday.
