let's go to cnn's jean casarez, who's in pontiac, michigan awaiting a verdict. a gene we were here just a few weeks ago when james, wife, jennifer, was convicted by a jury in that case of a jury, was relatively quick and their deliberations, what are we expecting to see here in james case >> well, it's actually ten hours of deliberation for jennifer crumbley and this jury first full day of deliberations. they've been added since 09:00. this morning. so we're now at about 02:30. what's interesting in this case is that it's a less complicated case in the sense that james crumbley did not have a lot of texts with a lot of different people. jennifer had so many texts that she was participating in right at that pivotal moment when that shooting took place. on the other hand, james crumbley is the one that purchased the gun james crumbley is the one that was the registered owner that had the care of the control, the custody of that gun. he is the one that actually went to the house to see if his son had taken the gun, which in the minds of the prosecutors, that means

cnn's jean casarez has those highlights from friday's testimony victor in is about one of the prosecution's witnesses on friday was detective joe brian. he heads up the special investigation unit and he testified that once ethan was in custody, he spoke to him and he asked him who has parents were who is father was? he said james, and the detective called james and told him to get down to the substation because that's where ethan was. so he and jennifer went down there. i think you can see from this video, once they got there, they were ushered into this interview room. there are two detectives, including detective brian in there and they started talking to the parents and james spoke a lot. jamie said that they had gotten in an argument the night before with their son, ethan because of a geometry score and that he had taken to ethan to school that morning, the morning of the mass shooting and he really thought everything was calm down and he told his son, just do the best you can in school he also was asked about does he have any issues and he said, well, he lost his best friend recently,

his son killed seen as jean casarez is outside the courthouse. she been following this trial from the very beginning. jean, what's happening right now? >> well sean hopkins is on the stand. he was one of the counselors at oxford high school. he was the counsel for ethan crumbley. he was a counselor so that was in charge of the well-being of students. and he just testified that it was as early as may of 2021. so this is months before the mass shooting happen, that he does not remember it, but he got an email from the english teachers saying that ethan crumbley was failing english and was sleeping through while the course of the english class continually says he doesn't remember the email. he was asked to meet with him. he doesn't remember meeting with him. but he believes that he followed through with that. now, the thing that is so important, this piece of evidence so important that prosecutors have put into evidence this is the substation interview with james crumbley and his wife. it was shortly after the mass shooting. it was videotaped via si

casarez. she's been following all of this force. so jean, what should people expect when this gets underway, which will be happening in just moments? >> kate well, first of all, i don't think we've ever seen james crumbley in a suit. he is in street clothes this morning. we have always seen him in his jailhouse yet oranges because he's never made bail. but this is so important because he has a right to a fair trial and a jury could be tainted if they did not see him in streetwear. so this is very different look for james it's crumbly and opening statements are minutes away in this case. and this is the involuntary manslaughter is a homicide case against james crumbley. because prosecutors are saying that he alone is responsible for the shooting of those four students at lost their lives in oxford, maybe his son pulled the trigger, but he bought the gun and that is i think one of the most important things that the prosecution is going to focus in on it was black friday. ethan had wanted a nine

his teenage son, ethan, shot and killed back in 2021 cnn correspondent jean casarez is joining us right now, jake, you've been covering this for i think from the beginning, a jury found james, is wife, ethan's mother guilty just last month, based on what you've seen, at least so far? far today, what stands out to you? >> i see a little bit of refinement in the openings from both sides and you know, since jennifer crumbley was convicted, a lot of people around the country are saying, wow, our parents should parents be concerned, am i next? and the prosecutor in the opening statement said this is a very rare set of circumstances stances, i think trying to calm the jury down that conceivably, our parents also, there a lot of gun owners on this jury, and they talked about during jury selection, how they stored their guns. and he says this is not about guns. this trial is not about how you store guns. this is trial is about this gun, but the focus was really in the process discussions opening foreseeability, that james crumbley was the one who could have prevented this mass shooting because

cnn's jean casarez has been following all of this from the very beginning and throughout, jennifer crumbley's trial as well. and during that trial, folks will remember gene, that the actions of james crumbley played a prominent part in that trial. very much so. and that's why prosecutors are going to argue here that he should be convicted of homicide because that's what he is charged with, just like his wife that he caused the death of those four students at so in high school, even though his son independently pulled the trigger, you know, it was thanksgiving 2021. ethan had wanted a nine millimeter gun for a long time, kept asking his dad and he texted back and forth those texts will come in and his dad sort of blew him off, according to jennifer crumbley's testimony. now, the parents had no oh, idea why he wanted a nine millimeter. they had a couple of other guns. they were locked up. they were smaller guns. he wanted a bigger gun on good friday is dads that are at let's go to the gunshot. let's see if they have any sales. they did they got a nine millimeter form and it was four days later

unlike his wife, cnn's jean casarez is live outside the courthouse in pontiac michigan for us. what can you tell us? does a jury have the case now looking at it, making their decisions? >> the jury has the case. they deliberated about an hour-and-a-half yesterday before going home, we believe they're going to to start any minute right now, starting to deliberate with jennifer crumbley, it was a ten hour deliberation, but this case is not quite as long large james crumbley did not do a lot of social media. he followed his son on instagram. we don't know if he ever saw anything, but we don't have all the texts and all well, that what he didn't take the stand. you're right. but the jury will have to assess him. they'll have to look to see if he committed gross negligence with that gun hi to unit where he hinted getting it to begin with they'll have to look at all the facets of him. so in a sense, he was on the stand because he took his sunday school every day. he would tell him oh, he loved him. he talked to his son the very last morning before that mass shooting saying, i know yo

soon as jean casarez is outside the courthouse in michigan, flores gene give us the latest the latest is they started deliberating at 09:00 a.m. this morning. this is the first full day of deliberations. they are still deliberating. they had been going all day they do have breaks. we don't hear about them, but they have breaks. they we know they have a lunch hour but there have been no questions at all, which is really highly unusual because with the jury instructions that include the law, which is very sophisticated, normally there were questions. there have not been any questions, but here's one communication we were able to confirm they want to stay late. they normally go home around 430 and they wanted to stay later than 430. well, here on eastern time, it is approaching 07:00 hour and they are still deliberating. so we have no idea where they are, what they are thinking about, what they're talking about. here's what we do know. there are four counts of involuntary manslaughter in involves the for young high school students that were shot by ethan crumbley at point-blank range. hi
