joining me now, gabe gutierrez at the white house, david jolly, peter baker, "new york times" white houserespondent and msnbc political analyst. gabe, take us inside the white house. what's the latest on the strategy to deal with this? >> reporter: yeah, that's right. as you mentioned, the white house and the campaign in full damage control. there are a lot of questions about how this is being handled. within a short time, we are told the white house chief of staff will hold a call with his staff and with junior staffers to try to keep them in the loop of what's going on. we are told that the campaign will do so as well with its staff. this comes as the president is expected to meet with democratic governors, both here at the white house and virtually, later on this afternoon. earlier today, we got an email from the campaign sending it internally to the staff showing they are bracing for negative polling that's expected in the near future, potentially from "the new york times," that they expect to see a swing in the race. what they point to is internal polling that they have had over the

joining me now is former republican congressman david jolly of florida and former democratic governor steve bullock of montana. he is also a former 2020 presidential candidate. david, what are your thoughts on what we're seeing? the first joint -- with trump -- an appearance with trump and vance since the convention. >> yeah, i think donald trump the entertainer is back. i wouldn't suspect he speaks much about policy, but probably what we heard the night of the convention that the election was rigged and he insults democratic leaders, much like he's asking the crowd to do right there. i think it also tells us that the trump campaign is wrestling with what are the different options that they might be facing in a ticket should joe biden personally make a decision. this is a campaign that would quickly have to pivot. but at the core of the trump campaign, it has not been changed by vance. it has not been changed by the assassination attempt. nothing has changed. he is a criminally convicted nominee of the republican party who tried to disrupt our democracy on january 6, 2021, and remains

david jolly, you know, the old switcharoo is not new, but this is a doozy. or jd vance cares about the little guy. can you think of one? >> no, but what donald trump realized when he was shopping around for a political party from which to mount a run for the presidency is populism is a very powerful drug and saying you're fighting for the little man matters. i think they have fashioned some form of economic policy within what is essentially a cultural movement and a white culture movement. if there's any eeth esthat sounds republican, it's within this notion of equality of opportunity. what republicans always fail to realize is to advocate for equality of opportunity actually requires policy changes here in the united states. that you're not actually born with the equality of opportunity in the united states. it actually takes policies to change that. republicans kind of missed that second part. and so i think as you see kind of the billionaire class and the vc class and the jd vance/donald trump class making this push, this real push and making progress in

joining us now, vaughn hillyard and former republican congressman david jolly of florida.unds like there's a debate between a strategic election pick or a governing pick. are those the strategies you are hearing from within trump world on this? what's your sense of how much longer they will hold off on announcing it? >> reporter: that's right. it takes me back to the 2016 campaign when you and i were covering that vp search. it came down to three finalists. we look at three potentially finalists here. we are looking at in 2016 there was a midwestern governor named mike pence. there was newt gingrich, sort of the congressional tactician and chris christie, more of the bombastic, bigger than life personality. this go around, when you look at who we are looking at, you have the midwestern governor, you have doug burgum, a low profile, not intimidating, not well-known. you have the likes of jd vance and marco rubio, both who are members of congress and who could potentially in a second trump administration better serve in terms of the actual execution of policies the trump adm

nbc's has one of the authors of the report,david jolly joining us, as well. firewall strategy >> it's happening on the money side. democratic donors are angry and spooked as they see the prospects of another donald trump presidency rising since that debate. some of them have openly told house democratic lawmakers and candidates that they see them as their only hope for keeping donald trump in check if he comes back to the white house. liberal groups meanwhile are telling us they're seeing a surge in donations to down ballot races, to their down-ballot programs. some groups are openly pitching donors on a message of think the unthinkable, a trump presidency is very possible. in that scenario the house is the only hope of a democratic firewall to prevent total republican control. the theory here is that the median house district, in the suburbs, is friendlier to democrats, more winnable for democrats than is the electoral college which gives disproportionate weight to rural areas. what would a total republican governments mean? take a listen to how democratic s
