you know, the national guard, we participate in several national security events at these she-profile events. we go through basic investigate and joining the military. there was a program in place, continue to vetting to make sure we ensure our security clearances and that we're not involved in nefarious activities. having as many members here for the inauguration so they just stepped up the -- the background checks, make sure that we've all met that threshold. once again, the lead federal agency, the federal bureau of investigation, they have taken care of that and made some identifications and we're moving on. over. >> and do you know -- is the vetting complete, or is it still ongoing? >> you know, i don't have those numbers readily available. however, i know there were over 17,000 in the last day or so. our numbers have ticked up quite a bit since then so i'm certain by the end of this event we should be cleared and support the mission successfully. >> i want to point out the vast majority of national guard troops are loyal and, you know, doing incredible jobs because they -- they

as national guard soldiers were in traffic duty.s the police were leaving, he was bringing those soldiers back into the armory and getting them deployed because he was very concerned. so he actually equipped them to get ready to go. he put them on buses. they were ready to move. the armory is really just a short drive from the capitol. you could be there in 15, 20 minutes, max. and they were ready to go. but he never got the order despite the fact that there was a call to the department of the army, which was very clear from both the chief of the capitol police, who was basically pleading. we had testimony last week from the chief of the metro d.c. police who said that he was absolutely stunned, was his words, stunned at the tepid response they got from the pentagon. they knew that they needed to send folks now. and well, when i asked general walker about what would the impact have been had those soldiers arrived at the capitol, he said in all of his years in military experience and dealing with these kinds of disturbances, as soon

we did not disarm the national guard. the request from the mayor was for unarmed support of local law enforcement and we authorized the support she and general walker requested. at about 2:30, it became clear to me that local and federal law enforcement personnel were insufficient to address the situation and the department of defense would be required to play a much larger role in establishing security in washington, d.c. at 3:00 i approved the authorization of the full district of columbia national guard to assist capitol police and the metropolitan police department. at 5:20 p.m., national guard arrived at the capitol. order was restored by 8:00 p.m. and the electoral college results were certified. those of you with military experience or understand the nature of military deployments will recognize how rapid our response was. krit says of the military response is unfounded and reflects inexperience with or lack of understanding of military situations is simply a result of politics. there are complexities to deploying

and we know national guard can mobilize like that.eone to deploy immediately if all the details haven't been worked out yet the states? >> you don't. as simple as that. there is a program in the pentagon called defense support to civilian authorities. we have been doing this for quite some time. there have been, operation jump start was mentioned in the briefing, during in the bush administration, where you had about 6,000 federalized forces, supporting the border agents. that support came in variety of ways. it was logistics support, driving trucks for them, doing meals for they will association they could put the border security doing their job. whenever you have a decrease in border agents, the ones who do the arrests, you have to support and sometimes d.o.d., department of defense is asked to do that. in this case the national guard is not being federalized under the northern command and control. they're being asked to go to the border and provide support. on a daily basis, we have aero stats, the big balloons that have cameras on

the national guard with the fbi, local police have been researching this wooded area here. just around the bend is the neighborhood where baby lisa lives, where she was last seen. that's just around there. this is the road that leads out of the neighborhood, back towards downtown or on to the freeways and all of these areas have been searched already. this pawnshop and the area around it have been searched. they wanted to be sure they could get a fresh set of eyes on it. they don't have a lot of other leads to go on. they're doubling back, being sure that nobody missed anything. here is what the fbi told us earlier. >> what we're looking at here is we have searched this area, we have new people out here, fresh eyes looking at the area that we have already searched. definitely being thorough, doing our due diligence and making sure we have fresh eyes out there, maybe there is something we didn't see the first time we searched it. >> reporter: fredricka, look at this area they had to re-search. it is dense woods, hard to even walk through it when it gets into this heavily woo

nick what more is the governor saying about this drawdown of national guard troops? >> we heard from him in the last hour talk about the presence of thousands, upwards of 5,000 national guard troops majority of which will continue to stay. it's going to be a slow unwind according to both the mayor and the governor. this isn't going to be something that happens immediately overnight. that imagery will continue to stay here. those national guard troops will continue to have a sort of presence here within the city and other areas outside of downtown. he spoke about it more in detail at a press conference a short time ago. >> it's been a very hard week. we kept everybody safe. since monday night, we haven't had any serious problems. i just thank everybody in the community for their help and keeping the calm keeping the peace. we couldn't have done it without them. it's going to take a while for us to get totally back to normal. i think lifting the curfew is a good idea. it's been a rough week. let's get back to normal in the city and get people back to work and school an

national guard. he said it took more than three hours to get permission to send national guard troops to the u.s. capitol. you previously led the washington, d.c. police. how convoluted did you see this response? >> it's very convoluted. until there's a commission of some kind established that can take a serious look into what took place on january, on and before january 6th, we are going to get at the truth. these senate hearings themselves will not get us where we need to be so we can avoid the sort of thing in the future. obviously there were a lot of miscommunications and breakdowns, intelligence, deployment or what have you. the only way you're going to find out what truly took place is if you put together this commission and has the time and subpoena power, depose witnesses, all those kinds of things to put together a 9/11 type commission. >> they need to learn all the lessons to make sure it doesn't happen again. national guard troops could have made a real difference if they showed up earlier

the national guard, they're in every area code in the united states. ng -- the guard didn't work for me, we worked together. as you know, my job as the first army was training and mobilizing national guard for four years. i know this formation well and these troops have been deployed multiple times. the ones that are from missouri. they're well trained. they're focused on their mission. they're indicative of the army you see in afghanistan and iraq and around the country. they're well trained, well equipped. i expect they will show up, having done their assessment, and to form -- to accomplish the mission that was given to them by the governor in the most efficient manner while respecting the people because the guard is from the people. many of them may come from the say community that they're coming in to police, carol. >> and just a final question for you. you know, a lot of these protesters last night broke curfew and, you know, someone through a molotov cocktail at police, gunfire, two people were shot, wasn't police involved shooting, but still gun

this man was a member of the puerto rico national guard and the alaskan national guard and he did have a combat deployment to iraq. he went to iraq, deployed from april 2010 to february 2011. now you will recall this was eventually -- there was the wind down in iraq but this was still during some of the very heavy periods of combat. and during that time, he engaged in military activities that resulted in him getting a couple of very significant medals. he got the iraq campaign medal with a star. that means he was in a combat environment. he was also awarded a service combat action badge as a driver and mechanic. so here is the obvious question that we don't know the answer to. he was in a position to be driesk a wheeled vehicle during combat activity in iraq. could he have been blown up? could he have been in an ied explosion? could he have suffered traumatic brain injury? could he have suffered post traumatic stress? these are some of the obvious questions of any service member that might have been in that kind of combat environment in iraq back during those years. we do not know the
