i totally -- owner/operator on broadway. i totally understand the concern because of some the prior behavior from previous operators. definitely these guys can attest the last seven months or maybe a little bit longer that this was a journey and a process. and i would say this too, although i'm friends with these guys, i think initially when they came in they were talking the talk, but they really, really learned how to walk the walk. and at this point in time, i think they really see what the color purple is on the broadway corridor. i wish them the best because i think with the addition of the tutuqua, we all remember that, and in addition of the wine club, the addition with these guys, they're blowing some good air in the balloon. we needed to let a lot of bad air out before we could get some good people in there. so i think the corridor is headed in the right direction. commissioner joseph: thank you. >> last but not least, barry toronto. i want to say i was so pleased to hear officer mathias as opposed to other officers

in the broadway area, the situation is totally different. in the four by five-block area, there are over 200 alcoholic beverage consumption licenses. many of those are fine restaurants and good saloons that we all enjoy, but over 40 of those menus in this small area have entertainment permit, and that is where the problem lies. there is nothing intrinsically wrong with an entertainment permit or in a club, but when you have the possibility of 40 of them doing that, then you have a real problem, and the police cannot deal with it. i think commander crenshaw has basically outlined that. the numbers are too large. on a typical friday or saturday night, you'll get 2000 or 3000 or more people released into the streets at 2:00 a.m. filled with alcohol and looking to keep the good time going. he mentioned something like having to doesn't, and it is not enough, and the cost is being borne by the public, which is not acceptable. i'm very encouraged by the legislation you are proposing and also by the positive response to it, and i wish you every succ

in evaluating the proposed sites for the parcel south of broadway, we considered a number of criteria. first, the need to refrain embarcadero and sue bierman park. the need for any new development to fit into the scale of golden gateway apartments, the golden gate way commons, and embarcadero center in historic buildings across the embarcadero itself. the area as a strategic location next to downtown and proximity to the waterfront, city's need for housing, and the opportunity for new residents to enliven activate the waterfront and the neighborhood and the downtown. this commission is well aware planning is necessarily a balancing act. this is especially true for this segment of the waterfront where historic the different opinions to exist. to help inform us, we looked at a number of international examples based on community suggestions and these are areas that are adjacent to downtown, and we chose compatible and broad comparisons. i will be a high low, but a number of the cities in general -- i will give you a high level here. here in hamburg and here in stockholm. we have also tri

. >> reporter: it's been weeks now, this sears department now on broadway is still boarded up. but today oakland police released photographs of some of the people they say were involved in the vandalism and the looting. oakland police say the images were captured by camera phones, police and store surveillance equipment. police are asking the public to help identify people on the videos. >> the photographs are very clear of individuals that were involved in this, i know citizens of oakland are very upset about what happened in their city about having outside people come in and break into businesses. >> reporter: police say with 80 police officers laid off this week, oakland needs strong communities to help combat crimes. >> we understand that we have to be smarting in how we do our police work. >> reporter: concern other crime and police lay offs is so high here at oakland's china town that some business have been talking about hiring their own security guards. but many think that security guards are not as effective as officers. >> we don't see any officers around here anymore
