then, just to make sure that this city works right. this is keeping it really simple. all of my conversations with the mayor, the supervisors, the department heads, how do we make this city work well and keep it working? we keep this simple but this is incredibly complicated when you know that every citizen would like input. many different opinions both internal and external. we must keep our promises. there are many promises to keep, many new ones and we are not just a local city, we are an international city. that is one of the most important highlights here, to understand how the city is so international. everything we do is reflected in the new international city that we are. the leadership is looked at more and more by people of other countries as to what they can bring to their own citizenry and their neighbors. this is a wonderful job, i do this with enthusiasm. i would like to thank the supervisors and to those who work with me and are our friends. i would like to extend my thanks you to my mother, my wife, my family who has been here. they have seen the sacrif

this is the city that has always been other people oriented. this is a city of remarkable diversity and it's a city that is truly prideful of that diversity. on our best, we celebrate that and unite around those things that bind us together. that is the spirit of our times and it's the spirit of what makes san francisco indeed a special place in the hearts and minds of people, not only across the state and around the country for that matter, around the world. mayor lee, here is my advice. you got a year. so figure out what it is you want to accomplish and work back from there. you were put in this position by the people to my right, but the people of san francisco are the people that are counting on you. and that's -- [applause] >> do what you think is right. and remember, just because folks make their way to city hall as important and impressive as that is, there are hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of thousands of people that do not have that privilege that also require your attention and also require your leadership. always remember that. t

people have taken it upon themselves to allow for this opportunity and celebrate this milestone in the history of our city and this nation. your it is a remarkable thing what just happened. not that many months ago we stood on the steps of city hall in recounting her behalf of our cities richard -- our path on behalf of the city . here we are celebrating the first chinese-american mayor in our great city. it is a remarkable thing and a very proud dana. -- thing. i spoke a little bit about this yesterday, but it is important set this reminds everybody this is the birthplace of the united nations. this is a city of remarkable diversity. we do not just tolerated. we celebrate it. that is a spirit of what makes sense and cisco a special place in the hearts and minds of people -- that makes san francisco a special place in the hearts and minds of people. mayor lee, here is my advice. you have a year, figure out what you want to accomplish. you were put in this position by the people to my right, but the people of san francisco are the people counting on you. this city is about culture. this city is about pride in ethnic heritage. this city is about an appreciation of the extraordinary talents of people on the arts side and to have 6000-year-old pieces that you can see no other place in the world come and to have the collection here -- you understand the brundage collection could have been dropped anywhere in the world. he chose us to be a caretaker of those 17,000 pieces -- whatever the number happens to be. we can do no less than justify that by being successful at raising what dennis tells me this summer in the neighborhood of $25 million. that is a small figure compared to what we have raised with this young museum, what a fisher family gave for the expansions of the museum of modern art, what was raised with the jewish museum. what we're trying to raise for the museum that will reflect the culture of the hispanic world of san francisco and beyond. all these institutions come together in one fashion or another and makes this part of the most wonderful place on earth in which to live. mr. mayor, i am proud,

a shared sense of purpose and commitment to this city that we all love. a sense of unity. i may be your interim mayor, but i intend to utilize this year and office to tackle our problems with resolve and seriousness of purpose. this is an unprecedented opportunity and perhaps it is just what san francisco needs at this time and in our moment of history. ness an opportunity to come together -- this is an opportunity to come together, to roll up our sleeves and go to work on the significant challenges we all face. for the benefit of all san franciscans. i hope to move us past the labels that have pigeonholed us at city hall or at least to not be bound by them. because if you're a so-called moderate, then i'm a moderate. i've spent the past two decades trying to make this city work, to work for all of us. for its entire history, people have flocked to san francisco with their hopes and with their dreams. they've invested in this city, not only with their money but with their sweat and with their blood. i understand that not only do people need to flourish here, but business ne

city of san francisco. we are extremely proud to be coming to this great city.e going to tell you a little bit more about what the america's cup coming to the city will really mean. i think it is right to say that we stand on the edge of an event that will provide enormous drama and theater over the next three years and add to the rich history of the america's cup. in a way, it is a gorgeous marriage between a great event and a great city. we know that the city of san francisco will embrace this america's cup like none other before. like the mayor said, it's likely to bring in something in the region of 10 million visitors from outside of the city to enjoy this event. this is something really special and really big. and this is one of the reasons why. please take a look at the screens. this is truly unique in the history of the america's cup. the ability to stage the entire race in the harbor in view of hundreds of thousands of spectators lining the shores in addition to millions of people on television all over the world. this course will be staged with these v

the heritage of this city. hpc historians provide technical expertise as well to maintain san francisco's status as eligible for federal and state grant funding providing enhanced roles in the nomination to the national register of historic places subject to consultation by federal and state agencies. by law state agencies rely on the determination of historic resources responsibilities. i have a vested interest in this city. i have a vested interest in knowing that we have timely, accessible, reliable, affordable, and save modes of transportation and services in the city. i offer the rules committee six policy areas of priority i can elaborate on a few wish. the first is accessibility. transit should be accessible in all neighborhoods and people and provide -- provided on a timely basis. affordability -- all modes of transportation and parking garages must be affordable, and not disproportionately impact low income communities. we must serve our communities in this city. reliability -- we must maintain and enhance our current levels of service. safety -- we must provide safe environments for pedestrians, bikes, buses, taxis, and traffic garages. jobs -- we must maximize local hiring with community contracts. it is important that we used muni contract as we look at the central subway and utilize and maximize mta to implement the local hiring policy that was just passed by the board of supervisors, and we m

this is an incredible city. everywhere i go, i tell everyone that this is the atlantis of today. ere is no other city in the world -- i have been everywhere. there is nothing like san francisco. in fact, to me, it is not even the united states. you can see how fox network always attacks us. we do not have an inferiority complex. we just do not follow blindly. we question authority. as i said before, a person for person, there are more artists and con artists in the bay area. >> you are someone who has identified so strongly with the bay area. a lot of it reflects the values that you also identify with. i know that you have been promoting an idea for a work of public art that could be pretty transformative. could you talk about that? >> peace brother is something that i saw, i think in the 1980's there was this lady. she started back there and converted -- she went to the neighborhood and was collecting the guns from some of the gang members. she had it melted and turned into angels. we want to do the same thing and take it to the next level we want to build a boom box by his feet,
