and bp has another massive problem on its hands. our chief environmental correspondent, anne thompson, who spent months covering the disaster in the gulf, is here in the studio with us with this latest problem for bp. anne, this has to do with a lost laptop computer? >> yeah, think about it. i don't know about you, brian, i'm always leaving my devices everywhere. apparently a bp employee did just that, on a business trip, lost this laptop. in that laptop was a spreadsheet that contained the personal data of some 13,000 people from louisiana who filed claims with the company after the oil spill. well, today those 13,000 people are now getting this letter which explains what happened. it also tells them what the information that was on there, including their names, addresses, date of birth, phone numbers and of course their social security numbers. so because of that, bp has set up a free credit monitoring service for these people so they can monitor their credit in case -- just in case they would become victims of identity theft. at

this administration simply cannot get away from trying to help their buddies at bp. it was interesting to hear our friends from across the aisle from massachusetts in our hearing today indicate that in the european waters off their coasts, they have the same drillers, the same international companies, and yet the safety records over there are much better than they are in the gulf of mexico. quite interesting, because the only difference is in this country, the administration is run by those that help out, president obama, those who help out president obama and they have sadly looked the other way while bp wracked up safety violation after safety violation and in the men time the other major drillers had one, two violations over the same period, bp racked up dozens of violations and then hundreds of violations until they had reached 800 safety violations. but did this administration rein them in? no. and when this administration could not bring itself to really come down on bp after the disastrous blowout at the deepwater horizon, that bp executives were negotiating a

, but nonetheless, it took the heat off of bp for a while. so perhaps the administration thought that after having the moratorium and putting tens of thousands of families out of work, putting tens and thousands of families on to unemployment insurance, devastating tens of thousands of families, perhaps the administration thought nobody would notice that the first permit that was extended after this moratorium to hurt the southern states actually hurt the whole country, but the first permit went to -- i believe it was noble energy company. but the major investor was a company called british petroleum. now was that a quid pro quo, ok, bp, we aren't going to take you out in the rose garden and have you announce you support the cap and trade bill because you aren't well thought of right now, but there will be pie in the sky by and by if you play along with us for a while. who knows what conversation occurred there. but isn't it interesting that bp was the largest investor in the drilling that got the first permit after the moratorium. now, under
