some people wanted to preserve the mural. others wanted to get rid of the mural. and we believe in a dialogue. so we brought together in mediation everyone so we could come to an understanding of what our common ground was and to see if we could agree on certain basic things, and we were able to come up with a solution that makes sense for the entire community. in a sense, it reflected larger issues that are impacting the city as a whole. so, there are issues like that that would require a knowledge of the neighborhood, and knowledge of what is happening on the ground, and knowing the difference is of how all bernal heights may look at an issue vis a vis the mission or portola. as a supervisor, i do have to be able to balance managing citywide issues, which is very important, but at the same time, focusing on the specific needs of your neighborhood. that is really important to us. one of the things we need to prioritize is that making sure we focus on the nuts and bolts of government. a lot of the calls we get involved fixing alights, replacing a pothole. i think

it is a huge mural of incredible works. >> the san francisco civic arts collection has been in existence since the turn of the century. it consists of everything from monument to golden gate park to market street, other works in the collection, from the wpa era, the quite tower, the works from the george washington high school. we have the contemporary education, where they depict some of the vocational arts that were taught at george washington high school. what is interesting is the artist's and corp. of some of the -- incorporation of some of the architectural elements. they used the speaker from the p a system as part of the design. on the opposite side of the library, we have a large fresco which depicts the academic subjects that were taught at the time. it serves as a foil to the other fresco in the library, we have academic subjects on one side, vocational subjects on the other, and result is the concept of a well-rounded education. additionally, what we plan to do is the academy of hospitality and tourism will be part of, so the students can share with other students, faculty, t

so it was really quite extraordinary and a mural describing the sistern and water collection system. this is a project, one of our green school yard partners, but it's a living library project. and it was rling amazing and there were a lot of people there and i think we do a lot of wonderful projects just of this nature except what's unique about this is that it was funded by the p.u.c. this is about managing groundwater, diverting water, even in, again, the most densely populated neighborhood in san francisco and according to board of supervisors, president david chiu, who was present, the second most densely popularitied in the country second to china toub in -- chinatown in new york. it was quite wonderful and i wanted to refer to that and to really give kudos to the people involved in it. but more to the model that we actually, working with something that clearly is of great benefit to our students and to our schools, with limited resources, but that actually is a kind of perfect model of collaboration with other agencies because it meets their goals, using mostly their resources

on the left, who painted the murals in the social security building with her husband and steph an kennedy. it's been a privilege to meet these people. just recently, i found this statue of roosevelt. is over looks oslow harbor. they revere roosevelt, because of what they learned from the new deal about how to build a civil society. they didn't get rid of it, they expanded it. just like other scandinavian countries are consistently rated as the happiest in the world. the new deal continues to live on there. thank you.
