kerry, are you with us? >> reporter: i'm with you. and this is just the early arrival of the tropical force winds before we're going to start getting buffetted by the hurricane force winds. as good as our technology is sometimes mother nature wins. we're with you right now. i'm in a little bit of a protected spot to try to talk to you. what we're seeing as irene is making her way here as bill karins told us it looks like the eye is headed right for this location. we're seeing the waves just buflting the beach and beach erosion taking place right before our eyes. there's a pier behind me, it's kind of hard to see in this crazy early hour here in the darkness, some of those baefs are so powerful and strong and so big that they're crashing over the end of that pier that goes out about 350 yards or so into the water. the community is mostly evacuated and that's what the north carolina government officials wanted. there are some people who decided to stay put and what they discovered this morning is even before irene fully arrived here as

last hour we spoke to you, kerry.part of a pier that had been shorn off. >> month more of the pier is gone, but if you are looking at me right now, you are saying what's going on? well, it's really calm here because we're in the n what is the eye. it's really ill defined. what's interesting is i'm going to take you up in the camera here, and as can you see some n certain areas it looks almost like blue sky there, and then as you look way out there you can see those really dark clouds. well, they're heading towards us. that's the eye wall that is heading this direction. of course, as you know, the eye wall is where the most powerful winds with the hurricane are. they'll be getting here. we imagine within about the next hour or so at the speed this hurricane is moving. the really good news, though, on the front end of this hurricane, we have the back end still to come through, but the really good news is the lack of damage. there's a little street flooding. there have been some fences knocked down, but no real extensive

kerry? >> reporter: well, indeed, brian. hurricane irene arrived early, lingered all day and is just about gone here. and in the wake is, well, there's destruction like that pier over my shoulder and also some deaths. in fact, two deaths directly related to hurricane irene. one man who was outside his home during the hurricane checking some of the damage when a tree limb broke loose, fell, crushed and killed him. another young man, a boy who was inside a vehicle who was driving with his family at an intersection where there was no power and those lights were out and the police say, because those traffic lights were out, there was an accident and that's why this accident happened and this young man died. hurricane irene made first landfall just south of the outer banks on north carolina's coast. winds in excess of 100 miles per hour ripped apart unsecured siding. tilted electrical poles and church steeples. downed trees. unconfirmed tornado is believed to have touched down in bell haven. damaging waterfront businesses. while

kerry, i see that you've lost power out there. >> reporter: yeah. that was predictable. the tropical force winds took the power out pretty quickly here. we've had some very strong gusts already. right now you caught me in a lull which i'm thankful for. some of those gusts about 45 miles per hour. if there is going to be any good news here, you can kind of see behind me the water and there's a pier behind me, some of the waves are already crashing over the end of that pier. but the good news would be that the tide is out as the storm is coming in. and so, it's summertime, we have the strongest tides. and so here we have the tide on the way out meaning when the storm surge comes in, it won't have the doubler effect of having that tidal surge on top of the storm surge. the police have been patrolling throughout the night the area. just before the sun went down, there were some folks who had ignored the mandatory evacuation orders here. and actually gone into the water and were swimming. of course, not only is this a little crazy, but there was nobody to help them if the und

and kerry, how does that case look?l team have a leg to stand on here in terms of fighting that probation? >> it's difficult to say, because the judge, judge stan strictland and this is a different judge as you remember, and you pointed out, for passing the bad checks, he amended or clarified his order about this probation yesterday. he did not speak up beforehand when it was pretty widely publicized especially here in the court system that when she got out of jail, she was walking away free, and he knew that would take place and he said nothing, but it was only until yesterday he issued the amended clarification and said that she needed to serve probation, he meant that the probation had to be served while she was a free woman and not as it was interpreted initially that she was serving that probation while she was sitting in an orange county jail cell waiting for the trial for allegedly murdering her little daughter, which of course, she was acquitted on those charges as everybody knows. >> well, everybody has been fo

kerry, what's the latest from down there? >> reporter: well, good morning, and good news is you see very few people here at the beach. that is good news, because it means tourists are beginning to take the warnings. some counties along the north carolina coast have already issued evacuation orders for tourists. now, here's how they hope it works -- that tourists recognize they need to leave today. and so they push inland and go where they need to go, which then opens the roads for the residents to be able to begin their evacuations tomorrow. because the idea is with hurricane irene coming in and as we just heard bill say, it looks like the eye wall will come right through here over eastern carolina shore. they're going to need to get a lot of people inland. and to get folks inland requires a lot of preparation on individuals, you know, there's just so much the government can do for you here, and that's usually after the fact. right now, they're urging people to recognize that you have to have a plan. you know, it sounds compl

john kerry is an interesting selection here. someone very likely could be the next secretary of state if president obama is re-elected, someone who has shown a willingness to do bipartisan deals over the last few years, the '04 nominee for the democrats so loved and respected by them. max baucus, very much talked about during all the health care debate as someone in the middle of the road swing guy and patty murray, more of the politician here as being head of the dccc, how far will she be willing to go on entitlements? >> let me get kristen in here. what kind of role is the white house playing here, an advisory role in democrat picks, for example, or trying to steer clear and let congress take this on. >> reporter: jonathan, the white house has been in constant contact with the folks on the hill. having said that, those picks were spearheaded by congressional leaders. here's what we'll see from the president. he will be putting the pressure on we expect publicly and behind the scenes to get some sort of a balanced approach. he'

please stay inside. >> again, that was nbc's kerry sanders in atlantic beach, north carolina. as we mentioned, the storm is expected to hit new york city during high tide tomorrow morning. nick is tracking irene and joins us with what that could mean in terms of flooding. hello. >> absolutely. hitting right at high tide. they'll have a storm surge of four, six, perhaps as high as eight feet so you get the high tide, the big waves. could be some big flooding issues for new york city. here's the developing of the storm weakening a bit as it hit the outer banks of north carolina. just got the update at 11:00 p.m. still sustained winds at 80 miles an hour. what's amazing about this storm is just the sheer size of it. it is about 500 miles across. that would cover about two-thirds of the state of california if it were on the west coast. here's a zoomed in picture. the center of the system not quite as wrapped one rainfall. a little drier air. it is creeping along at 15 miles per hour to the north northeast. right now it is off the maryland and delaware county coast -- the state coa

kerry? >> reporter: good evening, lester, this is the first hurricane to threaten the u.s. mainlands this year. if irene does make it to the land, the real concern is not just those powerful winds and the rain, but also the tidal surge, that storm surge that comes ashore that could inundate coastal areas like this. hurricane irene slammed the turks and caicos islands and portions of the southeastern bahamas with winds just under 100 miles an hour. tonight wide spread areas there are without power and phone lines. in nassau, long lines at the airport as tourists from toronto cut vacations short. >> we're very sad to be leaving early. >> we had to load up all of our luggage and put it in plastic bags in the bathtub. that sort of set in reality too. >> reporter: pictures from the u.s. space station show the size of the storm and today officials began a mandatory evacuation in ocrocoke island to the mainland. the high tower family evacuated with their two dogs, harley and sampson. the ferries which usually require reservations are now taking passengers first come, first served.
